Today is World Autism Awareness Day, and The Bahia Cabana Beach Resort on Ft. Lauderdale Beach wants you to know it. The Lauderdale landmark will be joining the likes of the Empire State Building, Sydney Opera House, and countless others by participating in the Light It Up Blue campaign.
The campaign -- where buildings, events, and corporations all use blue lights to commemorate the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day -- is spearheaded by autism advocacy organization, Autism Speaks.
Sporting fancy new blue lights, the Cabana will also be offering a free shiny blue Bud Light Platinum or blue Cosmo to anyone who comes wearing -- you guessed it -- blue.
All appetizers and drinks will be offered at 50% off and kids eat free no matter what they wear (though please put at least pants on them).
The event will take place between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., and the Bahia Cabana will match every dollar spent during that time as a donation to Autism Speaks.
The issue is close to the Bahia's heart, as general manager Andrew Knight has a son diagnosed with autism. The occasion isn't glum, however, it's celebratory.
"Autism awareness is important to the Bahia family, and so is having a good time with the people we love. We hope to do both on Wednesday," says co-owner Shamus Flavin.
