"You know how on Facebook you get these sponsored messages? I kept getting an ad for Ted Nugent's show at Pompano Beach Amphitheater," Tony Landa, bassist for the band Humbert, tells us. "One day after seeing it, I yelled, 'Fuck Ted Nugent!' and then I thought: Could that be a show?" Turns out, it could.

This Friday, at Kreepy Tiki Lounge in Fort Lauderdale, the controversial conservative rock star will get a not-so-welcome party.

Landa's done this kind of thing before. About 20 years ago, he put on a show with his old band, I Don't Know, at Churchill's called "Fuck the Eagles" (it was before The Big Lebowski said the same thing). "The Eagles were the first band to charge astronomical ticket prices," he explains, "so all these local bands got together the same night the Eagles were in town to play for free. Back then, there was no concern about people showing up pissed off. Nugent fans could be different, especially since I'll be passing out flyers at his show. I might make a flyer making it look like an after party."

Ted Nugent, for those who aren't familiar, earned his place in the classic rock history books with '70s tunes like "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" but has spent the last few decades spewing asinine right-wing and borderline racist diatribes against everything from Obama to gun control to PETA. "We all grew up liking his music," Landa insists, "but at some point he started saying really douchey things."

For Landa, though, organizing this show wasn't just about hate — it was also about love for his veteran band Humbert, who will be playing its first gig of 2016. More significant for Landa, the night will be in remembrance of his wife, Diane, who passed away earlier this year. "She was an animal activist who volunteered a lot of her spare time at animal rescues. I thought it would be a great way to pay tribute to her — to do this sort of protest show against someone like Ted Nugent."
