  • Big City Tavern

    Big City Tavern

609 E. Las Olas Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
    954-727-0307

http://www.bigtimerestaurants.com This classy bar and restaurant is one of Las Olas' key pickup scenes. Dinner is served in over-sized, circular booths, from which the diners can eye the folks at the bar and vice versa. Big City Tavern is reminiscent of the classic, traditional taverns of New York City, Chicago, and Boston. With a dozen international brews on tap and two dozen in bottles, Big City Tavern's selection might seem short when compared to those sports bars that pride themselves on 99 bottles of beer on the wall. But as the saying goes, it's not the quantity, it's the quality. And beer snobs all over South Florida slobber over the pints of Warsteiner (Germany), Guinness Stout (Ireland), and J.W Dundee's Original Honey Brown Lager (New York). The bar turns up the power with the Grolsch 16-ounce megabeers from Holland and domestic microbrews like the Abita Turbo Dog from crawfish country, Louisiana. Best of all, the Tavern stocks four Samuel Smith imports from England, ranging from the brewery's lager to its imperial stout. You'll pay more for any one of these last few than you will for a glass of merlot, but hey, Sam Smith's Nut Brown Ale has twice the bouquet of any vino out there. Read more about Big City Tavern >>

    954-272-3294

Recently opened in Davie, Big Dawgs II is the sister location to its longtime neighborhood bar in Pembroke Pines. The interior walls are exposed brick and adorned with kitschy sports memorabilia and musical trimmings. There is even a wall that looks like an old locker room, paying homage to favorite sports teams. Opposite the bar, tables are scattered throughout, and a metal stage sits in a corner. With an array of pool tables and a variety of live music throughout the week, there is no shortage of happenings to hold your attention. Extremely laid-back, the atmosphere is just as relaxed as the bar's patrons. Giving off a bit of a locals-only vibe, Big Dawgs II never provides with a dull moment. Bill's Filling Station

2209 Wilton Drive Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304
    954-567-5978

http://www.billsfillingstation.com It's easy to imagine the male gay bar scene to be covered in glitter with half-naked boys running around in neon and grinding to house music. Well, Bill's Filling Station is just the opposite. Low-key and laid-back, it's more of a neighborhood, no-frills kind of joint. After entering and walking through a narrow dimly lit hallway, it's revealed that the bar is a lot bigger than you would expect. There are flat-screen TVs broadcasting the latest sports events and a pool table in the back, and most of the crowd is mid-30s and up, all dressed casually. A large portion of the patrons are sipping on beers; there isn't a Tartini or pink cocktail in sight. A well-sized dance floor is opposite the brightly lit stage, and another bar is near the back. • The Billiard Club

    The Billiard Club

2610 Sawgrass Mills Circle Sunrise, FL 33323
    954-835-1114

What you may not know is that nestled in the "Oasis" - the outdoor division of the mall, near Ron Jon Surf Shop and the movie theaters - is a complete sports bar and pool hall, offering the perfect spot to take a break from the madness. The Billiard Club has two other locations in Miami Lakes and Davie, but the Sawgrass location has developed its own fan base of concertgoers (BankAtlantic Center is right next door, so expect preconcert specials and afterparties), mall walkers, and sports fans. UFC fans, rejoice: All paid fights air live at the Billiard Club, but you better arrive early, because seats fill fast. Nearby employees also frequent the spacious, brick-walled locale for "in the biz" specials, including free pool Sunday and Monday. And while you can take your pick of more than 40 specialty cocktails, the drink specials may be a better bet: Wednesday is "Bucket Night" (four for $10), and it's happy hour every day from open to 8 p.m., when you can get two-for-one Amstel Light, Miller Lite, and Heineken drafts as well as double well drinks for the price of a single. There's a sprawling menu of munchies to choose from; popular choices include standard appetizer fare like wings, calamari, and spinach dip - and the Phillys are always in high-demand. Come in Monday through Friday and order a drink or food item and get a free hour of pool. Night owl? Head to the Billiard Club on Friday or Saturday nights, when pool is free from 2 to 4 a.m. Read more about The Billiard Club >>

    Billy's Pub

11471 W. Sample Road Coral Springs, FL 33065-2696
    954-753-9456

Billy's Pub is a hidden hole-in-the-wall gem in the Coral Springs neighborhood. Having been around for quite some time, this little bar has become a drinking spot for many of the locals. A wooden bar sits in one corner with a pool table, arcade games, and dartboards on the other end of the room. Although Billy's serves only beer, patrons don't seem to mind. In this completely relaxed atmosphere, the jukebox is filled with rock tunes that keep the crowd singing along. Instead of Sunday football, stop by Billy's for Zombie Night, an evening of watching old-school horror movies. Read more about Billy's Pub >>

    Billy's Tavern

    8580 W. State Road 84 Plantation, FL 33324
    954-475-9464

Friendliness and casual comfort define the sports haven Billy's Tavern in Davie. Located on the tail end of a strip mall, Billy's gathers Pittsburgh enthusiasts and football regulars whose hearts pump black and gold blood and whose eyes are glued to the large projection screen on Sundays. But Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens fans don't have to fret, the welcoming environment extends from the customers to the waitresses to the bartenders. The pub only serves beer and wine, in addition to a full menu. But don't come here for the impressive selection of exotic brews or a perfectly blackened grouper. Instead head to Billy's for all the familiar faces during a happy hour that runs 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Read more about Billy's Tavern >>

  • Bimini Bay Bar

    Bimini Bay Bar

412 SE 32 St. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
    954-768-0960

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bimini-Bay-Bar/158407007898?fref=ts Hidden in a dark parking lot within earshot of airplanes landing at FLL is Bimini Bay Bar -- the czar of all dive bars, the sultan of all things skanky. The underground watering hole relishes the fact that it is a bit obscure and unknown to the general public. Heck, the banner outside the building proudly reads "located somewhere in Ft. Lauderdale." This is probably because it serves more than just beer. Once patrons enter the smoke-filled, cash-only establishment, they're greeted with undergarments stapled to the ceiling and adult films playing on the television above the bar. The young lady performing fellatio in the porno is likely to look very familiar to you, and after ordering a Miller Lite, you'll realize why. Yep, the bartender and the porn star are the same person; everyone just got an eyeful of her mouth wrapped around something similar to the neck of your beer bottle just a few moments prior. It's no wonder the risqué haunt opted not to have windows. Read more about Bimini Bay Bar >>

  • Bimini Boatyard

    Bimini Boatyard

1555 SE 17th St. Causeway Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
    954-525-7400

http://www.biminiboatyard.com In 2008, Fort Lauderdale's Bimini Boatyard was sold. Chef Michael Bennet - a decorated veteran of Fort Lauderdale's Left Bank - was brought in to overhaul the menu, and the musty carpeting and worn dining room was ripped out and replaced with smooth hardwood floors and bright-blue seating. But does it matter what the dining room looks like or how many awards the chef has won? When I go to Bimini, it's not for ceviche (pre-made and terrible) or mango "coulis-grette" (watery) or however many tobacco onions you top your dishes with (they're soggy anyway). It's to sit on the docks and eat a fresh piece of grilled, Florida fish - snapper, grouper, mahi, or swordfish - which are still on the menu and still under $20 at lunch. As long as they leave that part intact, we're OK. Read more about Bimini Boatyard >>

Red and green carpet, lit softly by lanterns, guides your way through Blue Anchor British Pub. Red curtains hang over old-fashioned windows; tea kettles hang suspended from the ceiling; and old-world paintings decorate the walls. A bookshelf runs around the perimeter of the joint, stacked high with trinkets, old tomes, and decoy ducks.
