America's Backyard

America's Backyard

America's Backyard, it turns out, is nothing short of a huge pool party where the pool is swimming with bartenders and the deep end overflows with sparkling alcohol.
Ed & Elaine's Tiki Hut

Ed & Elaine's Tiki Hut

There's no door, no sign, no cash register — just a thatched-roof hut decorated with bric-a-brac and a couple of tables nestled right on the shore of the Intracoastal, hidden just south of the Dania Beach pier.
Round Up

Round Up

This good-ol'-boy bar is a needle in a haystack off 595 in the back of a strip mall. But don't be fooled by the suburban-sprawl exterior; this place is all Texas heart on the inside.

  • The Billiard Club

    The Billiard Club

2610 Sawgrass Mills Circle Sunrise, FL 33323
    954-835-1114

What you may not know is that nestled in the "Oasis" - the outdoor division of the mall, near Ron Jon Surf Shop and the movie theaters - is a complete sports bar and pool hall, offering the perfect spot to take a break from the madness. The Billiard Club has two other locations in Miami Lakes and Davie, but the Sawgrass location has developed its own fan base of concertgoers (BankAtlantic Center is right next door, so expect preconcert specials and afterparties), mall walkers, and sports fans. UFC fans, rejoice: All paid fights air live at the Billiard Club, but you better arrive early, because seats fill fast. Nearby employees also frequent the spacious, brick-walled locale for "in the biz" specials, including free pool Sunday and Monday. And while you can take your pick of more than 40 specialty cocktails, the drink specials may be a better bet: Wednesday is "Bucket Night" (four for $10), and it's happy hour every day from open to 8 p.m., when you can get two-for-one Amstel Light, Miller Lite, and Heineken drafts as well as double well drinks for the price of a single. There's a sprawling menu of munchies to choose from; popular choices include standard appetizer fare like wings, calamari, and spinach dip - and the Phillys are always in high-demand. Come in Monday through Friday and order a drink or food item and get a free hour of pool. Night owl? Head to the Billiard Club on Friday or Saturday nights, when pool is free from 2 to 4 a.m. Read more about The Billiard Club >>

  • Billy

    Billy's Pub

11471 W. Sample Road Coral Springs, FL 33065-2696
    954-753-9456

Billy's Pub is a hidden hole-in-the-wall gem in the Coral Springs neighborhood. Having been around for quite some time, this little bar has become a drinking spot for many of the locals. A wooden bar sits in one corner with a pool table, arcade games, and dartboards on the other end of the room. Although Billy's serves only beer, patrons don't seem to mind. In this completely relaxed atmosphere, the jukebox is filled with rock tunes that keep the crowd singing along. Instead of Sunday football, stop by Billy's for Zombie Night, an evening of watching old-school horror movies. Read more about Billy's Pub >>

  • Billy

    Billy's Tavern

    8580 W. State Road 84 Plantation, FL 33324
    954-475-9464

Friendliness and casual comfort define the sports haven Billy's Tavern in Davie. Located on the tail end of a strip mall, Billy's gathers Pittsburgh enthusiasts and football regulars whose hearts pump black and gold blood and whose eyes are glued to the large projection screen on Sundays. But Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens fans don't have to fret, the welcoming environment extends from the customers to the waitresses to the bartenders. The pub only serves beer and wine, in addition to a full menu. But don't come here for the impressive selection of exotic brews or a perfectly blackened grouper. Instead head to Billy's for all the familiar faces during a happy hour that runs 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Read more about Billy's Tavern >>

  • Bimini Bay Bar

    Bimini Bay Bar

412 SE 32 St. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
    954-768-0960

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bimini-Bay-Bar/158407007898?fref=ts Hidden in a dark parking lot within earshot of airplanes landing at FLL is Bimini Bay Bar -- the czar of all dive bars, the sultan of all things skanky. The underground watering hole relishes the fact that it is a bit obscure and unknown to the general public. Heck, the banner outside the building proudly reads "located somewhere in Ft. Lauderdale." This is probably because it serves more than just beer. Once patrons enter the smoke-filled, cash-only establishment, they're greeted with undergarments stapled to the ceiling and adult films playing on the television above the bar. The young lady performing fellatio in the porno is likely to look very familiar to you, and after ordering a $2.25 Miller Lite, you'll realize why. Yep, the bartender and the porn star are the same person; everyone just got an eyeful of her mouth wrapped around something similar to the neck of your beer bottle just a few moments prior. It's no wonder the risqué haunt opted not to have windows. Read more about Bimini Bay Bar >>

  • Bimini Boatyard

    Bimini Boatyard

1555 SE 17th St. Causeway Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316
    954-525-7400

http://www.biminiboatyard.com In 2008, Fort Lauderdale's Bimini Boatyard was sold. Chef Michael Bennet - a decorated veteran of Fort Lauderdale's Left Bank - was brought in to overhaul the menu, and the musty carpeting and worn dining room was ripped out and replaced with smooth hardwood floors and bright-blue seating. But does it matter what the dining room looks like or how many awards the chef has won? When I go to Bimini, it's not for ceviche (pre-made and terrible) or mango "coulis-grette" (watery) or however many tobacco onions you top your dishes with (they're soggy anyway). It's to sit on the docks and eat a fresh piece of grilled, Florida fish - snapper, grouper, mahi, or swordfish - which are still on the menu and still under $20 at lunch. As long as they leave that part intact, we're OK. Read more about Bimini Boatyard >>

A handful of large flat-screen TVs occupies a space behind the bar above the glowing liquor bottles showing off music videos and the latest sports happenings. Blue Anchor Pub

804 E. Atlantic Ave. Delray Beach, FL 33483
    561-272-7272

http://www.theblueanchor.com Push through the ancient window-paned doors and British accents will pop and crackle as they mingle with island dialects and "Jeepers Creepers," the 1930s jazz song. Red and green carpet, lit softly by lanterns, guides your way through Blue Anchor British Pub. Red curtains hang over old-fashioned windows; tea kettles hang suspended from the ceiling; and old-world paintings decorate the walls. A bookshelf runs around the perimeter of the joint, stacked high with trinkets, old tomes, and decoy ducks. An assortment of national flags hang in every direction on the wooden walls, creating a historic feeling. Read more about Blue Anchor Pub >>

  • Blue Boar Tavern

    Blue Boar Tavern

1306 N. Military Trail West Palm Beach, FL 33409
    561-686-3865

http://www.blueboartavern.com A scrawled sign outside West Palm Beach’s Blue Boar advises that bare feet and tank tops are forbidden after 8 p.m. ("Dress Code Enforced 7 Days!"). But once you've got your sandals and T-shirt on, this high hog is serious about late-night hunger management. Blue Boar purveys homemade chicken noodle soup, beef quesadillas, char-grilled cheeseburgers, garbage fries, and a full lineup of classic greasy bar bites until 4:30 every morning. From all over the county, waitresses and line cooks point their sore feet and foul moods straight for the Boar; they keep showing up in shifts at€” midnight, 1 a.m., 2 a.m., 3 a.m. to shoot pool and throw darts or fuss over the pinball machines, to slump at the bar and watch ancient Mike Tyson fights on the dozen TV screens until brain, belly, and aching hooves have at last fully recovered. Even the bleariest dishwasher wouldn't call these onion rings or hot roast beef sandwiches gourmet fare, but in the deepest hours before dawn, there's a whole lot of comfort to be had from a gooey grilled cheese and a shot of Jack -- and you’re most certainly not going to care. • Blue Jay Lounge

    Blue Jay Lounge

301 SW 15th Ave. Pompano Beach, FL 33060
    954-941-4616

For more than 20 years, Blue Jay Lounge has taken care of its dear regulars and welcomed newcomers morning, noon, and night -- which all look the same inside this dark, smokey hideout by the railroad tracks. Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, you'll find ashtrays, 12-inch TVs, a pool table, and pictures of the Blue Jay family hanging on the wall next to Bahama Bob's old, retired guitar case. If it weren't for NASCAR races and NFL games (both projected onto a big screen for watching parties) reminding patrons that the weekend has rolled around, it'd be easy to lose track of the days inside this beloved, local haunt. • Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale

    Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale

2432 E. Sunrise Blvd. Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304
    954-653-2583

http://www.bluemartinilounge.com Part of a chain with outposts around the state and in Vegas, Blue Martini is known as a pickup joint for the middle-age set. Gold-diggers and diggees are lovingly tended to by beautiful Barbie-doll waitresses in blue corsets and flat-ironed hair. Adding to the vapid factor is the fact that this high-end martini bar with valet parking makes its home … in the Galleria shopping mall! Relatively soulless, even by South Florida standards, Blue Martini has drinks called "The Skinny Bitch" and "The Palm Beacher." But still, it packs a crowd (even when they charge a cover!); it gets loud and busy, especially on weekends. Big cigar-chomping spenders love this place (Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein was a regular) and it shows. The menu is slim but fancy (lobster tacos, anyone?) The dancers range from svelte boyish men who can do dead-on "Single Ladies" impersonations to beefy dudes who can hold the room's attention just by marching and flexing.
