America's Backyard

America's Backyard

America's Backyard, it turns out, is nothing short of a huge pool party where the pool is swimming with bartenders and the deep end overflows with sparkling alcohol.
Ed & Elaine's Tiki Hut

Ed & Elaine's Tiki Hut

There's no door, no sign, no cash register — just a thatched-roof hut decorated with bric-a-brac and a couple of tables nestled right on the shore of the Intracoastal, hidden just south of the Dania Beach pier.
Round Up

Round Up

This good-ol'-boy bar is a needle in a haystack off 595 in the back of a strip mall. But don't be fooled by the suburban-sprawl exterior; this place is all Texas heart on the inside.

American Legion, Harvey W. Seeds Post #29

    6445 NE 7th Ave. Miami, FL 33138
    305-757-5773

Located inside the American Legion, Harvey's is a laid-back sports bar with a slightly retro feel that can be morphed into a tiny dance club or live music venue. Fridays often feature local and national underground punk or indie bands. The back room offers lounging on battered couches. Saturdays, DJs spin a wide spectrum of music, from 80s to hip-hop, and even goth/industrial tunes. Pool tables offer alternative entertainment and gawking at the off-kilter art lining the walls is an event in itself. Open every day, Harvey's has a full bar and happy hour, with cheap drinks and specials almost every night. Late night munchers can try their greasy and delicious bar food. • The Broken Shaker

    The Broken Shaker

2727 Indian Creek Drive Miami Beach, FL 33140
    305-531-2727

http://www.bar-lab.com Although there is an increasing trend toward thoughtful cocktail consumption, the Broken Shaker boys did it better, making their own ginger beer — swirling cucumbers, fennel, and gin to become punch-ified — and perfecting classics like the Manhattan. Cofounders Elad Zvi and Gabriel Orta have a true passion for mixology that reinvents the cocktail wheel. They built everything at the Broken Shaker with their own hands. The interior space is homey, and the garden offers comfy couches and twinkling lights under starry skies. No guest list, no attitude, no lines. The place is much like a lover you might meet during aimless summertime travels. It's difficult to give your heart to someone (or something) that you know in advance will leave -- it was originally a pop-up bar. Yet this place claimed our love, and left. But, fortunately, it decided to come back, and we’re forever in its debt. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>

  • Burger & Beer Joint

    Burger & Beer Joint

1766 Bay Road Miami Beach, FL 33139
    305-672-3287

http://www.burgernbeerjoint.com This South Beach hangout has more attitude than a Hell's Angel. OK, perhaps that's pushing it a little, but it's a sports bar, lounge, and restaurant that is definitely more than just a tatted-up Mickey D's. (This should come as no surprise, because it is the creation of Automatic Slims' conceptual owner and a former GM from SushiSamba.) An upstairs lounge, open 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays and now Mondays for poker, is a great getaway for locals who love to rock, especially when bands perform. It boasts eight TV sets, green chalkboard walls, an oval bar, and a purple-cloth pool table. B&B's sports bar is where you can also find folks drinkin' and smokin' from happy hour on. With 99 types of beer, an incredible wine list, a full bar, and a cocktail menu with selections named "Harry Palmer," "Lowrider," and "Daisy Duke," you can bet patrons stay until the wee hours. But the focal point is the restaurant, where carnivores can customize a burger with a choice of a half- or full pound of free-range beef, Kobe, or turkey; four buns; eight types of cheese; grilled toppings; a selection of unique sauces (we're partial to the Atomic horseradish, tarragon rémoulade, and chipotle ketchup); raw veggies; and "Pure Platinum" toppings such as foie gras ($13) and truffle demi ($8). The least expensive cheeseburger runs about $10.75, but the "Stairway to Heaven," with Kobe, foie, and the demi, rings in at a whopping $39. Whatever you partake of, throw the thoughts of keeping kosher out the window and pair your beef with a deep-fried Twinkie and an adult milkshake (we love the "O Face" and "Money Shot"), made with Edy's ice cream right from the case. Even the kiddies will get a kick out of this joint, especially because they get their own menu and crayons with which to deface the tabletops. Hell, if you're feeling rebellious, pick up a Crayola too. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>

  • Cameo

    Cameo

1445 Washington Ave. Miami Beach, FL 33139
    305-532-2667

http://www.cameomiami.com Once upon a time, Cameo was a theater inhabited by skaters and punks. Trick contests took place in the alley while bands such as the Circle Jerks, 7 Seconds, Fugazi, and Gwar set up inside the large club. Nowadays, Cameo is one of the main clubs in the Opium Group dynasty. The floor plan is similar to that of neighboring Opium family member Mansion; the large main room features a DJ booth on a stage, and the second-floor balcony overlooks it and the dance floor. Depending on the night, partygoers can get a taste of hip-hop, house, or live performances from some of the biggest names in the industry. http://www.churchillspub.com Miami is sorely lacking in decent rock clubs, so Churchill's is home to many a scruffy punker who is too real for South Beach. A pair of pool tables, a large room for bands, and a sizable outdoor patio help house the mainland rock faithful. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>

  • Cloud 9 Lounge

    Cloud 9 Lounge

7126 Stirling Road Hollywood, FL 33024
    954-499-3525

http://www.thecloud9online.com Lesbian hangouts may be few and far between, especially in a place as unsuspecting as the quieter beachside city of Hollywood, and yet, there’s Cloud 9 Lounge. As divey as they come, Cloud 9 is the kind of place you turn to for good conversation -- and when you're in need of a stripper pole. But ladies, beware. The jig is up on this joint, and the creepers have moved in. Unless you’re there for an amateur strip contest, the hungry-eyed stares from men are less than welcomed. A regularly sparse dance floor and lack of movement from the bargoers make us wonder why they called it a lounge in the first place.
