http://www.manorlanesfl.com Although it's conveniently attached to Manor Lanes bowling alley, Sports Den Pub is on its own a fun place to pass time. Lined with loads of baseball memorabilia, the pub caters to a local and in-the-biz crowd. The watering hole has come a long way in the past few years, getting a much-needed makeover and joining the ranks of friendly neighborhood bar. Sports Den Pub offers a decent selection of brewskies, a pool table, darts, and plenty of seating to relax after a hard day or grueling bowling match. Unwind and prepare for the weekend Friday night, when Sports Den gets pretty crowded for karaoke. After all, if you don't like it, there's always bowling next door. Suite 100 feels worlds away from the other downscale eateries and bars in the Fort Lauderdale Riverfront. It boasts views of the river and million-dollar yachts from the outside bar. Inside, a striking cracked-glass motif glows fluorescent on columns and within the bar. Sit by candlelight at the tables outside, or grab a martini under the high ceilings. Either way, it will prove a much-needed break from dance parties nearby. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>
http://www.t-mex.net This tight little spot used to be San Loco Cantina. The name's changed, but the homey, semi-authentic Mexi-Cancun flair remains. Stop in for a Modelo (Yes, they have Corona too.) T-Mex is one of the best outlets for inexpensive Mexican street food in Fort Lauderdale, this 20-seat joint offers the signature "taco loco." The house specialty is a hard-shell corn taco with a choice of filling and a flour tortilla - spread with refried beans or guacamole - wrapped around it. Also available are burritos, taco salads, quesadillas, and enchiladas - hearty and satisfying homemade fare at fast-food prices. Chili-pepper lovers should check out the "stupid" sauce. Fort Lauderdale's Riverfront has a slew of bars and restaurants, including the newly opened Tap & Cork. With its large front windows, this bar is the spot for people-watching, especially on the weekends. A long bar occupies the back end of the room, where just about every bottle in stock is displayed in nifty glass cases. Although there is no liquor being served, you'll never notice. There is a slew of beers, wines, and even sake to choose from. In fact, sake bombs are the bar's speciality. Low-key in décor and atmosphere, this downtown bar is a laid-back find amid the packed venues on Himmarshee. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>
Downtown Fort Lauderdale's old-school punk bar has been brought back to life on Himmarshee Street. Sharing its location with E-Bar, this tightly packed bar may be small in size, but it's certainly large in personality. The exposed brick walls and industrial ceiling mimic that of an underground rock club from the ’80s in the meatpacking district. The entryway to the bar is open-air, perfect for people-watching. Packed into the corner, with close proximity to the patrons, is a tiny stage. During the week, various DJs spin, but on Sunday nights, an assortment of local rock-music favorites take the stage. Margaritas flow freely at Tequila Joe's, the latest addition to Fort Lauderdale's Beach Place. Nestled in a corner on the lower level, this indoor/outdoor bar is a beachside hangout. Simple in décor, the focus is more on the drinks. A large shiny wooden bar fills one end of the room, and TVs playing the latest sports games hang on the wall. In addition to plenty of margaritas and frozen drinks, the menu is packed with tacos, fajitas, and nachos. Just steps from the beach, this casual venue is an ideal place for spring breakers and out-of-towners looking to quench their thirst after a day in the sun. http://www.thedivebarfl.com The Dive Bar is the Galt Ocean Mile's quintessential locals-only spot off A1A in Fort Lauderdale. But don't let that name trick you; it's no hole in the wall. Its namesake is actually for the snorkelers and divers who have a tendency to hang out there. Filled with pool tables, an enormous bar, and a stage for live acts and karaoke nights, the Dive Bar has all the necessities for a great night out. Not only is this bar unique in décor but its crowd is an eclectic bunch who will share stories of the great sea with just about anyone who is interested. http://www.timpanochophouse.net Timpano is located on the block surrounded by Las Olas' chicest and trendiest restaurants. If you want to impress a date with a nice night out in a cozy yet upscale environment with a touch of romantic elegance, Timpano is a good choice. The space has indoor and outdoor seating with tables covered with white tablecloths. The Starlight Lounge, a martini bar, is the place to sip on a lychee martini, dish on dry-aged hand-cut fillet, and soak in the sounds of live jazz. There's a grand baby piano to set the romantic and sophisticated tone. Aside from chops, the menu features classic Italian fare. Also, there are plenty of appetizers around $10 for those who desire a light bite. Locals rave over the black skillet-roasted mussels. Get hot and sweaty dancing all night with the boys at Torpedo. This gay dance club caters to a mostly younger male crowd, looking to party all night. http://www.clubcorp.com/Clubs/Tower-Club-Ft-Lauderdale For a landed view, it's best to land among the landed gentry, of course. You can do that in this little corner of the wealthy universe high atop the Bank of America Building. How high above the earth is 28 stories, the altitude of the Tower Club? About a million miles for those of us who toil the streets below, working for a living. But for those who languish in huge leather armchairs or dine in Continental opulence above the rest of Broward's 1.5 million denizens, 28 stories is about 370 feet above the pavement. Ride up, walk in, take a look. You'll see the blue Atlantic sweeping in from North Africa to the east, the Everglades rolling out toward the gulf to the west. Great views of South Florida's famous development frenzy stretch to the north and south, too. If you aren't going to join the club, the least you can do is show up with a resignation letter in hand, à la Groucho Marx: "Please accept my resignation. I don't care to belong to any social organization that will accept me as a member." Just be sure to give them the letterafter you look at the view. A beachside hideaway for the local drinkers is found within Fort Lauderdale's Treasure Trove. Nautical trimmings and beer knickknacks are scattered along the walls where locals sharing stories occupy the high top tables and barstools. The jukebox fills the room with rock 'n' roll favorites, and the ocean breeze blows through the open-air dive. The bartenders know their patrons by name, and there's never a dry glass in the house. On Tuesdays, the bar is the place to go for an extended lunch break to chow on $1 tacos. Just steps away from the ocean, Treasure Trove is the quintessential place for beachgoers and townies searching for a relaxing night out away from the tourists. http://www.vibelasolas.com Brought to us by the same people who gave us YOLO and O Lounge, Vibe offers much of the same swank you've come to expect from that little plaza off Las Olas. Sculptural reliefs of curvy bodies create texture on the walls (look out for nipple-esque light fixtures above!) and reflect colors that rotate green, blue, purple, and yellow. Live bands play five out of six days. Mondays, though, are manic with '80s nostalgia. You'll hear Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Tony, Toni, Tone, among others. The few screens, one by the DJ booth and others in the bar, don't show sports or news. In a fun twist, you get to watch the music video for the song you're listening to. Also on Mondays, the two-for-one special applies to everything except specialty drinks, of which we strongly suggest trying the Smokey Mango or Pom Pom Pleasure. Hidden off 17th Street on Cordova, the nautical-themed Village Well caters to a mixed crowd. You're as likely to see the weathered village drunks - happy hour runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily! - as you are the snazzy Frank Sinatra wannabe or young adults watching football and playing pool. The giant bar accommodates crowds, allowing for comfortable access to the bartender's large selection, which includes wine, top-shelf liquor, and beer (ten on draft). Make sure to drop in Sunday nights when locals flex their pipes (or break glass) at karaoke. Even if the alcohol doesn't give you the courage to bare your soul singing "Love Shack" or "Sweet Caroline," like you've done a million times in your bathroom, watching the others will be just rewarding. http://www.waxys.com The pub's interior is so authentically Irish, you almost expect a peat fire to be burning. Instead, you'll have to get a glow off the Irish brews on tap, including Harp and Guinness. The fare's a bit inconsistent, comprising American (Buffalo wings), British (bangers and mash), and Irish (oak-smoked salmon) favorites. The Irish standards, particularly the beef stewed with Guinness and served with homemade brown bread, are handled best. Have a nightcap for dessert with whiskey-laced, bread-and-butter pudding. Enjoy an Irish breakfast on weekends. Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>
http://www.starwoodhotels.com A ritzy alternative to the beach-bum bars at Beach Place and farther along A1A, the W Hotel's Whiskey Blue boasts a sultry décor: Low, blue lights artfully drip from the ceiling, and a muted yellow glows behind the liquor on the shelf at the horseshoe bar. The bar shape is mimicked by the half-circle, black leather couches that line the left side. The space may be small, but that's OK - it's not so much a nightclub for dancing as it is a swanky gathering spot for schmoozing. The party continues onto the patio, which wraps around the corner and offers views of the beach that confirm why you vacationed (or live) in South Florida in the first place. http://www.wildsealasolas.com Another trendy addition to the ever-fleeting Las Olas Boulevard nightlife and dining scene, Wild Sea Oyster Bar & Grille appeals to the young professional crowd – or those with a more discerning palate and bigger pockets – looking for the newest, coolest spot to shmooze. Located inside the old Grille Room at the historic Riverside Hotel, the revamped bar and restaurant now features modern furnishings and whitewashed wood floors, giving the whole place an updated Hamptons feel. Crafty cocktails like the purple basil gimlet or a gin concoction made with Hendricks, Fresno chili, and egg whites are fresh and surprisingly creative offerings compared to other bars' on the strip. But with a limited – and pricey – food menu, inconsistent service, and the somewhat pretentious, assuming air of the rich new kid on the block, this seafoodcentric Las Olas hopeful needs to work out a few kinks before it can be considered anything exceptional. Steps away from the sand, inside Fort Lauderdale's Yankee Clipper Hotel lurks a passageway into the underwater world of magical mermaids. Once inside the Wreck Bar, you'll forget that you just walked through a hotel lobby. Dripping in nautical garb, the room is lined in fishtanks, and a bit reminiscent of the once popular theme-park ride 20,000 leagues under the sea. After one too many tropical cocktails, you might be wondering whether or not you actually stepped into a submarine. Behind the bar, large windows act as portholes into the hotel's pool, where you may catch a school of mermaids floating by. On Friday nights, be sure to catch the mystical ways of MeduSirena, Fort Lauderdale's own fire-eating mermaid. Show begins at 6:30p.m., but you might want to get there early in order to grab a seat. And to think mermaids only existed in Disney films. . . Read more about this Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach bar or club >>
http://www.yeoldefalconpub.com Sometimes, British-themed pubs exist primarily for drinking and listening to live music, not so much for the dining experience. Olde Falcon isn't one of those, even though their 50-odd strong draft beer list is the main draw. On one hand, the Falcon Pub is stereotypical: dark-wood-paneled interior, sports on the TVs. The music is cranked up loud, and the clientele are usually young folks watching a game and knocking back some good brew. But the kitchen is way above average, with a smattering of American favorites (pot roast, etc.) nestled between the standard bangers and mash and shepherd's pie. On your first visit, make sure to get the fish and chips - it's a standout. Some of the items you have to know about and ask for (like duck tenders with delicious orange sauce). Hit those puppies with a pint of Dead Guy Ale or Fuller's ESB (or a peach lambic if you're feeling extra-fruity) and feed your epicurean frenzy. http://www.yolorestaurant.com YOLO stands for You Only Live Once, which is probably the owners' way of saying, "Spend money and have another cocktail." Kidding aside, YOLO is run by a group of Broward County power peeps who know how to run a solid business -- the same guys who brought you Tarpon Bend, Himmarshee Bar & Grill, and Vibe nightclub. This trendy eatery mixes up the high-end and low-end eats with standards like prime rib and seared tuna salad balanced out by truffled potato chips and deluxe grilled cheese. One of the few places to see and be seen on Las Olas, YOLO has a distinct South Beach vibe -- trendy and sophisticated. There's even an outdoor fire pit. Brunch is served on weekends, and drinks include mimosas, a bloody mary bar, and fresh-fruit cocktails. Adjacent O Lounge is popular with local professionals needing an after-work refreshment.
