954-566-1992This former biker bar sits in a nondescript shopping center on 26th Street and Federal Highway, hidden by longtime eatery Egg & You Diner. Seemingly lifeless outside, customers walk into a sepia-toned cave populated by locals, a pool table, two dart boards, and some black-and-white photos of old Florida landmarks like famous bars and pre-construction spots on Sunrise and A1A. Sit down at the long wooden bar, and friendly service awaits you, but not a large selection of booze. If you don't mind drinking a Budweiser, the bar's charm lies in your ability to retreat with a beer, watch the various TVs, and not be bothered. Friendly locals are ready to share a game of pool or darts, but unless your idea of fun is keeping to yourself or having a conversation with a friend - a highly underrated, almost obsolete way to pass time in Downtown Fort Lauderdale - Skeeter's doesn't offer any kind of excitement or visual stimulation aside from what you make on your own or with friends. It is as nondescript inside as it is on the outside as the white walls stretch inside to hold you in the comfortable space. Led Zeppelin, always on heavy rotation at Skeeter's, blares from the jukebox. But not too loud: a major plus if you want to avoid the blasted eardrums of nights spent on Himmarshee. 954-630-2856The Wayward Sailor Pub, located on the southwest corner of Oakland Park Boulevard and Federal Highway, often serves as a post-party spot for nights at the music venue Culture Room. But it does fine on its own as it offers a relaxed, friendly atmosphere: nautical with the spirit of Fort Lauderdale but full of Pittsburgh Steelers pride. The bar has a wonderfully diverse selection of beer from standard domestics to Belgian beers you've never heard of to Pittsburgh beer staple Iron City. The food is served with the loving attention associated with a family-owned bar -- on most nights you'll see the owner manning the ship as he sits at the bar. Poker night with a casino style table is held regularly. TVs throughout the bar display all the sporting events of the moment. And the jukebox brings the tunes.
