http://www.facebook.com/pages/Brew-Urban-Cafe/113371182029117 It's a majestic coffee shop that also serves wine and beer - perhaps that's why Brew Urban Café is appropriately nestled in the slew of bars of downtown Fort Lauderdale. Tucked behind Tarpon Bend off Second Avenue, silver tables and chairs are planted on the sidewalk - usually filled with folks who can carry conversations. Inside, among the plush chairs and half-moon booths, there's a great mosaic of a coffee-drinking goddess. Indie, local art hangs on the walls courtesy of the art/DJ event Brew hosts each month called Dialect. Be ballsy and try the godzilla: That's 40 grams of protein and four shots of espresso. Or go for the electric shock: That's a vanilla-and-cinnamon-infused espresso, complete with a caramel glaze. Every coffee-shop-goer's dream is fulfilled: free wi-fi and friendly baristas. The microbeer selection includes Dogfish Punk, Stoudt American Pale Ale, and Rogue Dead Guy. Just try to find a Bolshevic Revolution anywhere else. Or, really, just try to stroll into a bar in downtown Fort Lauderdale and get served coffee. More >>

Coffee District has the neighborhood Starbuck's by the tea bags. To complement the District's constant flow of coffee, it's got a roomy floor plan, enough alcohol to sedate even the perkiest barista, and a stage that is regularly furnished with a stock of local musicians and poets. The Wall of Beer is an impressive selection. For the more refined, try the Sideways Pinot Noir. Slip in during happy hour (Monday through Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m.) and get twofers. Poker much? Stick around Monday after 7 p.m. for a tourney. The No-Limit Pub Poker Tour drops by 4 to 8 p.m. Sundays. More >>

http://www.twouglysisters.com A charming lunch spot tucked away in a former pastor’s home at Trinity Lutheran Church, the restaurant run by two sisters, Jonny Altobell and Penny Sanfilippo, has hidden in the annex for ten years. In a nod to childhood nicknames, the Ugly Sisters riff on their sense of humor that pervades the spirit of the place. A chalkboard lists the day’s five features, which include homemade soup, a rotation of sandwiches, and variations on mac and cheese. A plus for picky eaters: The sisters accommodate vegan and vegetarians as well as food allergies, so be sure to give a heads-up. And don’t hesitate to stop in for a fly-by coffee or tea and something for a sweet tooth. More >>

http://www.granfornopronto.com Down the street from the lauded Gran Forno bakery resides its sit-down sibling, Gran Forno Pronto, an old-fashioned-looking Italian shop with wainscoted walls, black-and-white-tiled floors, and a cast of characters. Tourists and locals drink espresso and Menabrea on a sprawling patio dotted with umbrellas. A busy, graceful pizzaiolo mans a brick oven. A handful of new-in-town Italians works the floor. The people, the menu, the setting, and the price point hit a sweet spot for lunch in particular. Behind the counter sits a beautiful crusty loaf several feet long, stacked with Italian meats, provolone, and arugula. Cakes posed on old-fashioned dishes align the counter. It's tough to order wrong here, especially when it comes to pizza and bread, though a favorite is the meatballs. Milk and bread crumbs from the area's most heavenly bakery ensure that they're light and nearly pillowy. Doused with red sauce and a healthy heap of Parmesan, they're among the most delicious in town. More >>

http://www.javaboys.net Put simply, now that Starbuck's has invaded Wilton Manors (at Five Points, in the old Shakespeare's Pub location) those beholden to its corporate charms will go there. Folks supporting the little guy, however, will come to this cruisy spot in the gayest strip mall in the state. Put it this way: Anita Bryant has nothing to do with the Florida orange sunshine cake. Cheaper and way friendlier than a Starbucks, with free WiFi, and some well-worn tables where you can work, slurp, gawk, and More >>
