  • Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Cafe

    Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Cafe

    1421 S. Miami Ave. Miami, FL 33130
    305-577-9811

http://www.segafredobrickell.com By day, Segafredo is filled with people sipping lattes, reading newspapers, and playing backgammon. By night, the lights are dimmed, a DJ spins, and women wearing stiletto heels drink champagne cocktails. Sometime after dusk, a velvet rope and a valet parking attendant appear, and what was a cozy red, black, and gray coffee shop with upholstered couch clusters becomes an urbane bar and restaurant. The seven-page drink menu starts with the signature Italian coffees of this international chain, but is mostly filled with tropical cocktails, martinis, and wines and champagne by the bottle. Food choices are limited to small plates, salads, and panini. Try crisp thin-crust pizza pies served on wooden paddles, or one of the carpaccio plates of tuna, octopus, salmon or filet mignon. At night, sip a Treviso -- an iced coffee drink with espresso, Baileys, and Kahlúa -- the caffeine jolt will keep you up dancing. In the morning, come back for tea and apricot pastries. If the owners set up cots in the back, you wouldn't have to go home. More >>

  • Starbucks

    Starbucks

2026 N. Flamingo Road Pembroke Pines, FL 33028
    954-602-1234

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Broward / Palm Beach and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Subculture Coffee

    Subculture Coffee

509 Clematis Street West Palm Beach, FL 33401

Over the past few decades, Americans have had no choice but to live with a limited selection of coffee. There isn’t much to choose from outside the good old double-D’s or Starbucks. And it’s that much more evident here in South Florida, where specialty coffee shops are few and far between. But all that’s changed thanks to Subculture Coffee, one of South Florida’s pioneering microroasters. The bakery and coffee shop serves craft-style coffee made with specialty-sourced java made in-house using precision roasting and brewing equipment. Created by restaurateur Rodney Mayo and Habatat Coffee founder Sean Scott, the two men have partnered to bring to life one of just three microroasting facilities in Palm Beach County, outside of Oceana Coffee in Tequesta and Panther Coffee in Miami. Their vision: to open your eyes to coffee beyond that gas-station sludge and fancy ordering system. Located off Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach, the shop is open from early in the morning until late at night, offering a variety of fresh-baked goods, wine, beer, and — of course — coffee. Scott roasts as many as three times a week, producing up to 25 pounds of small-batch beans that have been painstakingly sourced from various regions across the globe, from Central and South America to Africa and the South Pacific.
