221 Old Dixie Highway Jupiter, FL 33469
    561-401-2453

http://www.oceanacoffee.com/order-coffee Oceana Coffee is one of the only local roasters in the area. It's the brick-and-mortar result of three years of work for Amy and Scott Angelo, who spent time tasting beans, learning sourcing, experimenting with roasters, and building the cash to start the shop. The shop is open daily from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., with pastries and breakfast fare available. Oceana coffee is also sold at Marando Farms, on Sundays at 8 a.m. at the Palm Beach Gardens greenmarket, and online. More >>

  • Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Cafe

    Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Cafe

    1421 S. Miami Ave. Miami, FL 33130
    305-577-9811

http://www.segafredobrickell.com By day, Segafredo is filled with people sipping lattes, reading newspapers, and playing backgammon. By night, the lights are dimmed, a DJ spins, and women wearing stiletto heels drink champagne cocktails. Sometime after dusk, a velvet rope and a valet parking attendant appear, and what was a cozy red, black, and gray coffee shop with upholstered couch clusters becomes an urbane bar and restaurant. The seven-page drink menu starts with the signature Italian coffees of this international chain, but is mostly filled with tropical cocktails, martinis, and wines and champagne by the bottle. Food choices are limited to small plates, salads, and panini. Try crisp thin-crust pizza pies served on wooden paddles, or one of the carpaccio plates of tuna, octopus, salmon or filet mignon. At night, sip a Treviso -- an iced coffee drink with espresso, Baileys, and Kahlúa -- the caffeine jolt will keep you up dancing. In the morning, come back for tea and apricot pastries. If the owners set up cots in the back, you wouldn't have to go home. More >>

  • Starbucks

    Starbucks

2026 N. Flamingo Road Pembroke Pines, FL 33028
    954-602-1234

Since its founding by a trio of aspiring coffee roasters in Seattle in 1971, Starbucks has grown to become the largest coffeehouse in the world, with upwards of 20,000 locations in Broward / Palm Beach and around the world. Named for the chief mate on the whaling ship from Moby Dick, the company didn't begin chasing the Great White Whale of world java domination until the 1990s, by which time it was opening a new store every day. A turbulent economy has since forced it to retrench, but the chain remains a powerhouse both commercially and politically, thanks to its op-ed-penning chairman, Howard Schultz. A purveyor of whole foods, Starbucks typically farms out its secret recipes to a single, Starbucks-owned bakery in each city, and now sells a good deal of its coffee beans at grocery stores. • Uncle Louie G

    Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices

1808 Young Circle Hollywood, FL 33020
    954-674-2379

http://www.unclelouiegee.com Italian ices, milk shakes, smoothies, and old-fashioned egg creams are on the menu of this store chain, imported from Brooklyn. It's near the courthouse, so lawyers, jurors, and police types drop in for a scoop of something or just to cool down after hot cases. Late-night clubbers drop in on the weekends. Unusual flavors inspire downtown shoppers to queue up on hot days -- the downtown trolley stops nearby. A chocolate-covered jellyring ice or strawberry cheesecake ice cream are some of the more exotic flavors served in cake or waffle cones or in paper cups. Don't miss the waffle ice cream sandwich -- two waffles hot out of the waffle iron with a scoop of your choice in between. Just try to eat it before it melts. It's wallet- and kid-friendly. More >>

  • Way Beyond Bagels

    Way Beyond Bagels

16850 Jog Road Delray Beach, FL 33484
    561-638-1320

http://www.waybeyondbagels.com Walk into this Delray Beach, lime-green market of Jewish delicacies and the place lives up to the name. In one deli case, a baker sets out rainbow marzipan bars and rugelach in apricot, berry, or chocolate. Nearby, another Way Beyond Bagels' employee doles out servings of smoked fish and preps bread for a pair of chopped salads. But the bagels here are the hallmark. They’re so delicious that the former pastry chef of the French Laundry and Bouchon has written about them. “Get a schmear for me,” Shuna Fish Lydon remarked. Kettle-boiled and then baked, the rounds offer a crispy crust and chewy, aromatic interior. In flavors beyond standards, there’s veggie, cinnamon crunch, sourdough pecan, and seven-grain. Pick up a dozen to go, with a selection of cream cheeses from early morning to late afternoon, as fresh rounds are baked hourly. More >>
