It's in the Stars

By Brandon K. Thorpe

It's in the Stars

Carl Sagan was a scientist, a teacher, and a poet. He wrote 20 best-selling books that, together with his epic Nova series, Cosmos, convinced a generation of the romance of the scientific endeavor. He lent respectability to the notion that there was life on other worlds, and that speculating about such life constituted a valid scientific inquiry. He advocated tirelessly for critical thinking and skepticism, ecological responsibility, and public engagement. When Sagan died in 1996, at the age of 62, reality lost one of its most impassioned advocates.

So — Fort Lauderdale is giving the guy a holiday. Three local organizations — the Broward College chapter of the Center For Inquiry, Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists, and the James Randi Educational Foundation — are throwing an all-day shindig at Broward College to celebrate Sagan’s life and legacy. The astronomer Phil Plait (author of Bad Astronomy and Death From The Skies), famed escape artist and investigator of all things paranormal James Randi (Flim-Flam, The Mask of Nostradamus), and astrobiologist David Morrison shall speak about Carl’s life and significance. Meanwhile, on the campus lawn, roaming magicians will circulate among scientific exhibits for kids. In the evening, Plait will take control of the campus planetarium for indoor stargazing.
