Just because your idea of a popping Friday night doesn't include a shred of bottle service or house music from DJ Anybody doesn't mean you don't deserve to have fun. In fact, it could mean even more. How about a good time with a side dish of culture and a main dish of delicious ethnic food? That's exactly the type of event Sharonda Chery had in mind when she created Cuisines & Poetry eight months ago. Chery was inspired by her love of all things creative and knew there would be people interested in a similarly inspirational experience. As performers hit the stage, the room fills with support and motivation for people brave enough to expose their personal poetry, music, etc. But some will argue that the real star of the show is the food. Chery makes a point to bring in different, exotic cuisines each month to feed not only your stomach but your need to try new things. Last month's African food was a hit, but we have a feeling this month's Asian/Caribbean fusion will steal the show and feed into the creativity that has been specially crafted to make Cuisines & Poetry such a success. Cuisines & Poetry takes place this Friday and the first Friday of every month at Midtown Art Gallery, located at 1033 Sistrunk Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. Admission costs $10 for two before 9 p.m., $10 a person after 9. Food is $10 a plate. Visit facebook.com/cuisinesnpoetry, or call 954-278-0153.
