Club Headz

The newly opening Girls’ Club may sound like either a gentleman’s joint or an exclusive dive for femmes. But it’s neither. It’s actually an alternative art space showcasing (among its many male and female works) a broad collection of local and national contemporary female artists. The Club (117 NE Second St., Fort Lauderdale) is the brainchild of Broward artist, Francie Bishop Good, and her husband David Horvitz, who had together amassed such a prolific collection of modern art that they just had to share it with all of South Florida. Qué generoso, no? Good’s aim is to spice up the art world in Broward, holding free exhibitions at the Club and hopefully offering educational programs in conjunction with local museums in the near future. They’re also planning to turn their website, www.girlsclubcollection.org, into an extensive hub for art, where local artists will have profile pages with examples of their work.

The Club’s first exhibition, “Talking Heads,” collects modern portraiture across multiple forms, like photography, painting, and video, and opens this Friday at 6 p.m. In addition to the displays, Miami-based art radio project, Talking Heads Transmitters, will be broadcasting live, and local performance artist David Rohn will be doing his thang as he mingles with the crowd. Opening hours extend from Friday to Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.; regular gallery hours will be Wednesdays from 1 to 5 p.m.
