Will This Make Any Reel Difference?

By Jake Smith

In South Florida, you can’t get far without running into a mega-chain store. Wal-Mart and Burger King have taken over the foods we eat and the clothes we wear, but the problem doesn’t stop there – even mega-nightclubs have moved into town, a.k.a. Scores and Coyote Ugly. Is this a good or a bad thing? In the film Independent America, two former NBC journalists set off across America on a quest to take as many back roads as possible and shop at only mom-and-pop stores along the way. Is that even possible anymore? More importantly, would those shops have a decent cup of joe? Community activist Jayne King hosts an airing of Independent America, which explores precisely those questions, at the Delray Beach Public Library (29 SE Fourth Ave., Delray Beach). This is the first in an ongoing series of films she’ll be showing for free on the second Saturday of every month starting at 2 p.m. Call 561-266-9490, or visit www.independentamerica.typepad.com.
