Members of Miami-based, self-professed “street punks” Die Trying are trying hard to introduce South Florida to the working-class reggae movement that once dominated England and Jamaica. Joining forces with longtime reggae-punk purveyor Eric Bronson, the band formed the Goldcoast Vintage Reggae Society. Each first Friday of the month, the Goldcoast Vintage Reggae Society hosts “Rockit Steady Fridays” at Fort Lauderdale tikiphile watering hole Five Points Lounge. These vinyl enthusiasts gather and spin nothing but vintage and classic ska, reggae, rocksteady, and dub wax all night. In between the older and newer island riddims, Rockit Steady Fridays also feature a performance by a like-minded artist. This week, the boys from Die Trying will be doing both the DJ’ing and the performing. Consisting of the more formative bands from Miami’s punk scene, including the Hellhounds, Unit Six, and Five Across the Eyes, Die Trying yields cathartic, Everyman sing-alongs that are perfect melodies to raise fists to and chant oi! oi! oi! along with. They are considered one of the Magic City’s most underrated bands. Grab your most tattered ranger boots, a flight jacket, and some suspenders and judge for yourself this Friday. The rocksteady skanking starts at 9 p.m. Friday at Five Points Lounge, located at 2608 S. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. The $5 cover goes directly to the bands.
