Two Aging Nonpunks and 25,000 Screaming Fans

Sting and Elvis Costello have a lot in common. They’re both household names thanks to lucky breaks during the punk explosion, though neither of them were ever really punks. They both like their English — Sting used to teach it, and Elvis is rather good at using it — and both had early hits with reggae-rock ditties devoted to women with loose morals. Difference is, Sting took pity on his “Roxanne,” while in “Watching The Detectives” Elvis had the good sense to be scared shitless by the impassive girl “filing her nails while they’re dragging the lake.” This is, one suspects, the reason The Police are headlining tonight’s 7:30 p.m. concert at the Cruzan Amphitheatre (601-7 Sansbury’s Way, West Palm Beach), while Costello’s just opening: Horror doesn’t sell as well as friendly paternalism. We’d bitch about it too, if we weren’t so happy to see Stewart Copeland and Pete Thomas sharing a bill. Tix run $40 to $225; grab them at www.ticketmaster.com.
