Executive chef and owner of John Bull English Pub, Paul Schlosser, took over the pub after working with the likes of Hilton Hotels (he was Executive Sous Chef at the Newark Airport Hilton) and Disney's House of Blues. He has applied that kind of expertise to John Bull, a space that, despite its being firmly upscale, is nostalgic for a down-home, at-home vibe and the British heyday. There are the usual pub classics like the Guinness-braised lamb ($21.95), fish 'n' chips with malt vinegar ($13.95), and a char-grilled burger ($8.95). But there's also enough variety to keep boredom at bay: try the grilled salmon on a white bean and fennel ragout ($18.95), the brie wrap with toasted almonds and caramelized apples ($10.95), or one of their gluten-free items. If you're looking to spend no more than a ten spot on quality British fare, John Bull English Pub has the quaintest and most convenient specials we've seen: on Mondays, burgers are $5, and during the early-bird special from 4-6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, the most popular dishes are $9.95 - that includes bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, and a hot open-faced turkey sesame sandwich. The outdoor section is dog-friendly, and the drink specials and events come easy. There's a daily happy hour from 4 to 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. offers half-price domestic drafts, wells and calls, house wines, and $5.95 appetizers. Domestic buckets are always $10, and martinis are always $6 - and those are best enjoyed during karaoke on Wednesdays, Texas Hold 'Em on Tuesdays and Thursdays, or Fun Day Sundays (trivia night!). Ladies' Night is on Thursdays from 9 p.m. until midnight: after ladies pay the $5 cover, they drink for free. And their filet mignon? It drops to $16.95 on weekends.
