Twenty years old and counting, White Apron Catering has accumulated a pretty impressive list of clients: Chanel, Cartier, the Harvard Alumnae Club, Hermes, J.P. Morgan. One doesn't, however, need to fork over excessive dough to sample their exquisite appetizers -- the tiny Kobe cheeseburgers or the salmon pinwheels, the Palm Beach cheese puffs or the mushroom tartlets. Just like Gloria Steinem or the unnamed "visiting dignitary" who enjoyed the sample menus posted on their website, you may partake. Stop by their shop on Dixie Highway, where every week, White Apron offers a changing lunch and takeout menu. One recent Thursday, we found grilled free-range chicken with Parmesan sandwiches, and ham salad with baby greens en croissant (both $8.50); dinner entrees of beef braciola stuffed with spinach Fontina ($14), and Caribbean jerk-style chicken ($14.50); butternut squash, apple, and pear soup ($4.50); and roasted sweet potato salad with coconut curry dressing ($8.50 per pound). Whatever you take out will be elegantly wrapped in kitchen paper with a rakish raffia ribbon and packed in a handsome paper tote - these folks do nothing halfway.
