UPDATE: This location is closed and now under new ownership. It is now East End Eats. Barbara Young has created a setting that exudes comfort and charm, from the familiar scent of your old Aunt Millie's sitting area to the cozy leather couches and armchairs filling the room. Framed vintage shots of old Fort Lauderdale cover the high-reaching walls; signs offering "Free Beer" let you know you're in the company of friends, even though beer is nowhere to be found on the menu. The scent of freshly baked cookies wafts through the room thanks to the open kitchen in the back, where you can watch the cooks fill the ovens with classic treats like apple pie, brownies, and cheesecake (Barbara's signature). And don't be fooled by the name "Bake Shop" -- you can also choose from a variety of heartier options for breakfast and lunch, like a bagel (made in-house) with steak, egg, and cheddar or a piece of Barbara's famous crab quiche. Try the steak-and-cheese sandwich, made with juicy chunks of tenderloin cooked to order, or the shrimp and grits, a hefty portion of creamy cheddar grits and Cajun shrimp topped with a pour of Barbara's homemade lobster bisque.
