Herban Kitchen Critics' Pick

2823 E Oakland Park Blvd
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306

Website
This best loved of gay-friendly hangouts has recently doubled its size -- from ten tables crammed shotgun-style into a narrow hall, it’s finally opened up into a space that can accommodate Herban’s many enthusiastic fans. Chef Robert Zurlino’s trademark style infuses everything, from colorful bottles of homemade salad dressings (choose from a basket of five) to the crunchy focaccia and Italian breads served with a steamy, fragrant head of roast garlic. Entrées, particularly the “chef’s favorites,” are memorable, homey comfort foods: stuffed baked chicken; a pork tenderloin rolled around cornbread stuffing and doused with a sweet glaze of apricots, figs and brandy; and a magnificent salmon filet filled with a whole crab cake. Entrée prices include soup and salad, so you won’t go away either hungry or broke. A pear tart with cinnamon ice cream and pools of melted caramel for dessert is out of this world.
