Salerno's offers the kind of fork-twirling, garlic-bathed Italian food everyone used to crave before they found out lettuce came in purple. The atmosphere is strictly hold-the-highbrow, and the service works with less than machine-like precision, but the rush from the homemade pasta and the right-on red sauce compensates for the famigilia-style atmosphere. The simple menu, which includes pizzas and subs, concentrates on lots of dishes ending in vowels: Try the cavettelis or any of the baked dishes and you won't mind that you'll soon be buying slacks with elastic waistbands. The humdrum desserts and salads don't mute the pleasures of a Salerno's experience. One warning: Ask for a doggy bag.
