Over the past few decades, Americans have had no choice but to live with a limited selection of coffee. There isnâ€™t much to choose from outside the good old double-Dâ€™s or Starbucks. And itâ€™s that much more evident here in South Florida, where specialty coffee shops are few and far between. But all thatâ€™s changed thanks to Subculture Coffee, one of South Floridaâ€™s pioneering microroasters. The bakery and coffee shop serves craft-style coffee made with specialty-sourced java made in-house using precision roasting and brewing equipment. Created by restaurateur Rodney Mayo and Habatat Coffee founder Sean Scott, the two men have partnered to bring to life one of just three microroasting facilities in Palm Beach County, outside of Oceana Coffee in Tequesta and Panther Coffee in Miami. Their vision: to open your eyes to coffee beyond that gas-station sludge and fancy ordering system. Located off Clematis Street in downtown West Palm Beach, the shop is open from early in the morning until late at night, offering a variety of fresh-baked goods, wine, beer, and â€” of course â€” coffee. Scott roasts as many as three times a week, producing up to 25 pounds of small-batch beans that have been painstakingly sourced from various regions across the globe, from Central and South America to Africa and the South Pacific.
