The Jib Room

2104 E Oakland Park Blvd
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306
954-564-3581
Many things recommend the Jib Room beyond the average price of the entrées ($10.95 for penne a la vodka! $15.95 for a pork chop!). One is owner and attorney Deborah Carpenter-Toye, who comes right over, grabs your hand for a firm shake, and focuses like she’s slipping your pertinent info into some brilliantly organized file drawer. A seafaring Caribbean menu includes shellfish stew, mahi fingers with creamy cilantro dip, filet mignon of tuna with orzo, plus comfort-food staples like fried chicken and mac and cheese. Chef Luis deGennaro adds local Italian favorites -- chicken livers with hot peppers, veal Sinatra. The result is a great neighborhood café with a full liquor bar and easy-on-the-wallet prices. The house specialty pistachio poundcake, also sold by the loaf, is to die for.

My husband, 2 year old daughter and I went to The Jib Room knowing nothing about the place. On our way in, we asked the owner if it was appropriate to eat there with our 2 year old daughter who was with us. She smiled and said "of course". We ordered the little neck clams in a delicious sauce, unfortunately I couldn't eat them as each one I tried was too chewy and came with a mouthful of sand... YUCK! We also ordered the conch salad and it was so-so. We split our entree of penne vodka (I've tried penne vodka all over town) this was just okay. Oh yeah and they have NO beer on draft, even at the bar. As we were packing up to leave, one of the owners came over to our table to say that my daughter was disrupting the restaurant and I need to take care of her or leave! WOW, the table next to us was a big party with young kids and they were talking to our daughter and my husband and laughing with them. The table on the other side heard what had happened and said I shouldn't pay my bill; they said my daughter was behaving just fine. I was so upset after a mediocre meal that as WE WERE LEAVING the owner had the nerve to come up to our table and say that to us. It's too bad, because our desert was so very good, a Pistachio Pound Cake. We were going to order 2 full cakes to bring to a picnic the next day, but of course we didn't and we will never eat there again. Our waitress was very attentive and informative, great service from her.

My husband, myself and my 9 month old son have been to the Jib Room on numerous occasions and would HIGHLY recommend it to ANYONE and EVERYONE! The food is to die for, the service is great, and atmosphere is friendly, especially the way that Debbie greats you at the door with a smile. I find the above review to be ridiculous. Everything we have ordered, including the clams and the conch salad has been exceptional. We will be returning to the Jib Room again and again!

  • How do I begin? The food is too expensive, the beer is too expensive (plus they don't have any beer on draft, or decent happy hour prices), the atmosphere is too pretenious for being where Jumpin Jack's used to be, and the owner's husband is rude. He actually tells customers, who are paying too much to begin with, that they can't use cell phones! When my cell phone rang, he asked me to shut if off or leave! I have also seen him drinking at the bar constantly throughout his shift, and actually asking the bartender to make his drinks! His wife is nice, but her husband is a jerk. The food is so-so, it's not even that good. It's just not an enjoyable experience. I wouldn't recommend this place ANYBODY!!!!!!

  • Bad food, bad atmosphere = bad experience. Good service, bad management. Power hungry management to be honest.

My husband and I ventured in to the Jib Room over the weekend and we had a very pleasant experience. The food was very good and the service was excellent. We started with the brie and the conch fritters, both were delicious. My husband had the filet of tuna with orzo and I had the penne a la vodka, both of which were excellent, and of course we followed it up with desert, the pound cake, it is definately to die for! I would definately recommend this restaurant to all of my friends!

A large group of us (10) had dinner at the Jib Room in early June. We received excellent attention and service and the food was to die for! Everyone ordered something different so we could all taste. It was a rousing good time - both in the bar before dinner as well as during the service. We couldn't believe they had just opened in May - everything went so smoothly. We live in Orlando and plan to patronize the Jib Room every time we visit Ft. Lauderdale. We highly recommend the Jib Room.

Funny how the negative reviews all have the same name, Lisa!
A disgruntled customer perhaps? with an out-of control child? Come in and decide for yourself...all those who have come in love the atmosphere and the food is to die for...see you at The JIB! A great neighborhood find!

October 06, 2007 - My husband and I give it 2 thumbs down. I had the coconut crusted snapper over rice. It was overly sweet, way too much pineapple and what tasted like duck sauce heavily infused through the rice. Sickening sweet, no savory and after a couple bites I put my fork down. If I were blindfolded I'd never know I was eating fish. The good dollop of canned diced pinapple on top was overboard too. Keep it simple chef! My husband had Seafood Stew. 1/2 of the seafood was cooked perfectly..the other half overdone. Wasn't worth the price of $22 or around there. The raved-about conch fritters were a little burnt. Left a burnt flavor in my mouth and the beer batter was greasy. The cocktail sauce was average and ketchupy, no lemon in sight either. The owner asked how everything was on our way out and when my husband began to comment, she didn't want to hear it, said "we were the first to complain!!" They are a bit pretentious and should listen so they may improve. She left & went to attend to something else 'more important'. Our waiter also was no where in sight at the end of the meal so we could let him know, NO it wasn't ok. Some bus girl cleared. I did like the pistachio pound cake. We spent well over $120 with drinks, dessert, cappucino and wish there was a money back guarantee now. Fish tanks are awesome tho. Oh, the live music was like karioki, but at least not too loud.
