You have to hand it to the young owner of Upper Crust, Chris Ghalayini who runs U.C. as a luncheon/catering business most of the time but opens for gourmet dinners and specialty nights Friday and Saturday. They’ve never skirted a risky proposition (we found shark with coconut mash on the menu once) and for the most part, their ever-changing dinner entrées are beautiful and delicious. Seared tuna comes out looking like a casket of spilled jewels – all rubies and emeralds with its cactus-pear salsa and spears of asparagus. The goat cheese pastry with homemade cherry compote is a favorite, and breast of chicken served with roasted roma tomatoes and walnut basil pesto is a delicious take on a classic. Bring your own wine (there’s no corkage fee), and be sure to make a reservation – this small, elegant room holds just eight tables.
