Shizen Japanese Cuisine

716 E. Las Olas Blvd
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301
954-763-8163
Shizen isn’t just a sushi/sake joint but a splendid restaurant where you can choose from a host of distinctively creative Japanese dishes that reach way beyond the realm of raw fish. Of course, you can order sushi if you wish -- 27 types of seafood are available á la carte, and there are 20 house rolls, some more creative than others. Still, it’s the derring-do of dishes like an ocean foie gras made from monkfish liver, fried chicken served with flash fried bok choy, and rib eye steak cooked with enoki mushrooms in a ceramic pot that elevate Shizen above its routine sushi competitors. These dishes are all appetizers — not a bad idea to make a meal of these, as there are only nine main course items, none of which are as compelling as the starters. One of the better entrees is a whole fried snapper, fleshy cubes of the fish fried to sweet, white succulence. Shizen is, quite simply, one of the best Japanese restaurants in South Florida.
