Tiny, pretty women with Skrillex cuts emotionally screeched along with every single lyric sung by Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim last night at the Fillmore on Miami Beach. It was in this haze of feelings and mixed drinks that I realized that the xx makes R&B for white people, with an emphasis on lesbians.
Though the British trio sort of half-assed their performance, they were clearly shocked by how insanely enthusiastic the crowd was. Hey, xx people, South Florida may be tan and sexy, but we all have feelings too. Jeez.
The music made people as frenzied and hot as if they were at a Brian McKnight concert. It's high in sensuality and emotionality. It's slow, but powerful, and never without hope. Sex and love get all tangled up in each other under a thin lyrical veil. But, my point is, the crowd was mostly 110-pound Kendall and Pembroke Pines-bred lesbians. And, Jamie xx played an electric drum instead of a steel drum. Come on, dude, we're in the Caribbean, impress us.
Anyway, to further prove our point, we've gathered lyrics by the xx that could easily also be sung by R&B god R. Kelly.
"And you've got the faith/That I could bring paradise"
"Do I have to keep up the pace/To keep you satisfied"
"I've been down on my knees/And you just keep on getting closer"
9. The entirety of "Do You Mind?"
"Tell me I need to know/where do you wanna go/'cause if you're down/I'll take it slow/make you lose control..."
"Baby, I like your style/so lets get it on/when we touch/I can't get enough/I'm falling for you/Honey would you like/to make love tonight/the whole night"
"No need for talking/I already know/If you want me/Why go"
"Maybe I had said/Something that was wrong/Can I make it better/With the lights turned on"
"I'm burning to impress/It's deep in the middle of me/I can be fantasy"
