Artist to Watch: Nil Bambu Infuses R&B with Sultry, West Indian Flavors
“Love is the only thing worth doing. Anything else is secondary,” unsigned R&B singer Nil Bambu Tweets out to just a few hundred followers.
We first caught wind of the Fort Lauderdale up-and-comer via the visual for her latest release, “Time Travel," which dropped on YouTube on June 14 and was directed by the mysterious, Miami-linked
Bambu was born in the tropical islands of Trinidad and Tobago, making the touch of island flavor in her music authentic. Although she left Moruga, Trinidad, at an early age, she stays true to her roots in her music. “The ultimate gift is to spread a message of love and practice the balance between material and spiritual life, the East and West, one’s inner and outer worlds,” says Bambu.
R&B in South Florida might still be lacking when compared to other flourishing underground scenes here, but if the songstress's latest moves are any indication, Nil Bambu is set to change that.
Released earlier this year, Bambu's Fever EP embodies her West Indian roots. The title track, an upbeat, banging dancehall number, was remixed by South Florida producers Nick Leon, CrashTandy, and Dancehall DJ Silent Addy, making a sultry visual a must. Directed by Julian Yuri, the clip is chaotic, trippy, and super sexy.
Bambu quickly switches up the beat for a smoother ride on "Time Travel." Her black silhouette throughout leaves her appearance to our imaginations, but her voice tells the story of an adventure. Her Bindi and arm jewelry occasionally catch the light, sparkling into the void of nothingness as her lithe arms twist and weave, calling to mind styles of traditional Indian dance.
Nil Bambu plans to open the doors and share the way of the Bambu on a global scale soon. Stay tuned.
