Come to Papa
Following a successful tour of the Northeast, New Orleans's Papa Grows Funk arrives in Florida this week, where the band demonstrates why it's the hottest thing to come out of the bayou since your Uncle Louie's Cajun pepper sauce. Theryl deClouet, lead singer of Galactic (another collective of funky New Orleans cats who recently graced the Culture Room's stage), has claimed that Papa Grows Funk makes his band look like children. And while that may be pushing it a bit, the fact remains that the members of this funk machine include musicians with years upon years of experience playing steamy, simmering fusion in the New Orleans area. The group is such a hit in Louisiana that its debut, Doin' It, made the top 10 of all CDs sold at the 2001 New Orleans Jazz Fest, despite an utter lack of record-company distribution -- or even available copies under the festival's merchandise tent.
