Better than: your garden variety house music set.
It was business as usual for the Poplifers on Saturday night with DFA's Tim Sweeney throwing down at the Electric Pickle, the only exception being the turnout, which was somewhat lacking. Where were the hordes of colorful t-shirt-clad hipsters that give Poplife's parties their exceptional tongue-in-chic merriment? This time it was mostly the usual crowd of Pickle die-hards with hardly the volume of people you expect at Poplife's Saturday night soirées. But the joint was certainly not dead and the floor got populated enough by midnight to do the occasion justice.
Poplife resident DJs Aramis, Induce, and Mike Deuce took turns on the decks, warming up the ersatz dancefloor downstairs with their signature collective blend of electro, disco house, assorted funky oldies and miscellaneous bass-heavy bangers. Same deal upstairs where the dance quotient was substantially higher, given the additional floor space.
Mr. Sweeney came on around 2 a.m. and delivered a superb set with all
of the bouncy groovy disco goodness we've come to expect from the DFA
contingent without ever being let down. The downstairs floor finally
came to ass-shaking life as he cruised through the sounds of the
nu-disco, disco house and deep house cosmos with some rare groove and
Italo disco rarities thrown in for good measure, and we dug very much.
Personal Bias: Straightforward unpretentious melodic disco house is how I like to get down on a Saturday night.
The mild-mannered cop doing security at the Pickle's door -- serving
and protecting the safe and quiet streets of Overtown from the drunken
menaces to society inside the Pickle?
By the Way:
Poplife's next installment at the Electric Pickle on Saturday, October
3 will be featuring DJ sets by Brooklyn-based electro-disco mongers In
Flagranti and indie pop darlings Chairlift. Hipsters rejoice!
