"Empress of Hip-Hop" Soulflower Hosts the Electric Mothership Cruise This Saturday, May 30
If you like your local music smart, conscious, uplifting, and all kinds of other complimentary adjectives, then you've probably heard of Soulflower. If not, get with the program -- she's one of the few visible female MCs in the local underground circuit, and is dedicated to getting more women participating in hip-hop culture. For proof, check the mixed-chromosome company on the lineup for her Electric Mothership Cruise, departing from Miami Beach this Saturday, May 30, for a night of boho culture and heavy rhythms.
The occasion is the release of Soulflower's new Electric Mothership album, which comes out officially next Tuesday. To celebrate, she's taking over the Tikki Beach party boat (you know, the funky one docked in the Indian Creek, with the thatched roof huts). From 9 p.m. to midnight, Soulflower will hold a listening party for the album and perform an acoustic set, followed by a DJ set by Brimstone.
After that, the "reggae roof" of the boat opens up and the Mothership takes to the seas. Onboard, expect one of the most serious roots parties to date. There'll be a roots and culture fashion show, appearances by the Fire Empress dancers, and DJ sets from DJ Firewood and DJ Dharma. Live poetry will come courtesy of poets Asia, Maxis, Diego, and Rosa, and breakdancing from the all-girl Heartbreakers crew.
Finally, there's more live music -- a lot more. Performers scheduled so far include Fantao Bomb, Marijah, Bellatone, Saraphym Arym and Yah-Yah, Maniac Park, Buhzrok (all the way from Jamaica), Kehv, the Fabulous Moonshyne Brown, and of course, Soulflower herself, again.
Tickets for just the listening party and acoustic performance until midnight are $10. Tickets for the whole shebang are $50, but the party goes until 4 a.m. and that includes free drinks the first hour of departure!
