It's been a pretty decent past few years for the gay community. You guys got silver fox Anderson Cooper for sursies and young buck Frank Ocean too. Don't ask don't tell was overturned and you can get married, sort of, in like 16 states. Sure, shooting for 50, but you gotta start somewhere. And for those of you ready to come out that closet, today, National Coming Out Day, is the time and where ever you are is the place.
We put together ten of the fiercest pop tunes about or related to coming out to get you in the mood to spill the gay beans.
Frank Ocean is a gay inspiration. He came out this year to both a lot of support from guys like Jay Z and Tyler the Creator and the disdain of a handful of assholes. Just yesterday the young singer topped Kanye in social relevance according to theAskMen 2012 most influential dudes list
. It's not cause he's gay, but that bold coming out move made him one bad mammajamma in the eyes of many.
9. The Queers - "Queerbait"
If you think we don't know that you're gay
If you're gay that's okay
Just admit it, you loser
Come out of the closet today
What's a gay boy to do?!
8. Josie Cotton - "Johnny Are You Queer?"
Johnny, tell your poor beard! You're queer and you're here. Get used to it.
7. Sophie B. Hawkins - "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover"
For the gay ladies out there, this jam is a perfect coming out song. Light some scented candles, grab a glass of pinot grigio, and let your homegirls know, becoming your lover may very well be a real option.
6. Belle and Sebastian - "Seeing Other People"
Sure the lyrics for "My Brother" are about coming out: "My brother had confessed that he was gay. It took the heat off me for a while." But this "Seeing Other People" is more fun and still kinda queer with the line: "You're gonna have to change and you're gonna have to go with girls. You'll be better off, at least they know what they're doing." God love Belle and Sebastian. No one else quite gender-bends with such subtlety.
5. Gloria Gainor - "I Am What I Am"
Your life isn't a sham until you can shout out "I am what I am," but it's much better after you let the world know how fabulous you (and Gloria Gainor) truly are.
4. Hüsker Dü - "The Biggest Lie"
For the alt gay boys out there, we don't want you living the biggest lie. Come out and join us in celebrating, well, George Michael.
3. George Michael - "Freedom '90"
With all respect to y'all, this is the gayest stuff the mainstream '90s had to offer besides...
2. RuPaul - "Supermodel"
...Ru! With this song, the beautiful queen makes everyone sashay out the motherfucking closet.
1. Coming Out Crew - "Free, Gay, and Happy"
That's right! Free, gay, happy! Get out here and start having some fun.
Happy National Coming Out Day!
