Celebrating the Fourth of July in the middle of the week was kind of a bummer. We've got a wicked hangover and our wallets are empty after spending too much money on fireworks. And now the real weekend is just hours away but our plans are looking pretty grim.
Luckily the city of Fort Lauderdale won't let a little mid-week celebrating keep us down. Here's a list of five things to do this weekend that won't break the bank.
BLS954 Monthly. Friday, July 6, 10 p.m., at Five Points Lounge, 2608 S. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $5, first 50 people get a free hand-printed poster from Jinx Remover. Black Locust Society returns with another installment of its monthly party series. And if you've ever been to a BLS event, you know it's nothing to skip. Performing is Black Seal and Party Monsters with DJs Esoteric and Junkyard Eagle. Throughout the night, Jinx Remover will be doing live screen-printing. For more info click here.
City Wide Market. Saturday, July 7, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Pompano Beach Civic Center, 1801 NE Sixth Street, Pompano Beach. Admission is free. Gas is really expensive nowadays so driving around looking for garage sales isn't as fun as it used to be. The City Wide Market is your solution. Think of it as every great yard sale all under one roof. For more info click here.
Lavola. Saturday, July 7, 10 p.m., at Green Room, 109 SW Second Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. Describing the "Lavola sound" is a difficult task. It's sort of like At The Drive In meets Pixies with a hint of Radiohead. Voted "Best Rock Band", Lavola is taking the music scene by storm. Throughout the night DJs Andie Sweetswirl and Hank Justice will keep the dance floor going. And don't forget to scope out the gallery walls that will be decked out in pieces from local artists. Drink specials include $3 select craft beers and $3 vodka drinks before midnight. For more info click here.
Sweet Chariots. Saturday, July 7, 11 p.m., at Poorhouse, 110 SW Third Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. With their freshly combed pompadours and tight black T's, the Sweet
Chariots fit the rockabilly poster-child mold. But don't let the scent
of Murray's and cuffed denim fool you; it's not just all good looks and
boyish charm on stage. Singer Thomas Warren's powerful vocals and
spine-tingling shrieks evoke the spirit of Elvis and pay homage to the
great Jerry Lee Lewis.
C&I Studios Movie Night. Saturday, July 7, 8 p.m., at C&I Studios (in FAT Village), 541 NW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is $1. Every now and then, it's nice to break away from the typical
movie-theater experience -- especially when the tickets there are a
whopping $10 apiece. Candy, soda, and popcorn will be available at the refreshment stand. Don't forget to bring comfy seating with you; pillows and blankets welcome. Movie night is a regular happening, occurring on every first Saturday of the month. For more info click here.
