Better than: Having no show at all.
If there was every any doubt about South Florida's raving youth and their commitment to Krewella's hard and dirty party antics, all nay-sayers were hushed forever by the chanting hundreds who couldn't even get in the front door.
"Let us in, let us in," the mob demanded, but the bouncer's waving arms had nothing but bad news.
A line of hundreds had built up at the club's entrance long before doors opened at 8 p.m. With an hour to go before Krewella's midnight take over, the fire marshal had taken one look at the madhouse of heaving bodies inside and ordered a standstill. No one else was going to get in, even if they had previously purchased a ticket for $30.
Of course, being standard music bloggers, we arrived just after this most upsetting declaration. We found the place swarming with hundreds of excited raver kids who stood around chanting, complaining or rearranging their night. Most of them didn't even understand what had happened.
But we can't take no for an answer, and we can't work our way through a mob of sweaty "friends of molly." Unfortunately, things were so incredibly hectic, we missed the first hour or so of the trio's massive set standing around, pleaing with people that no, we weren't just trying to sneak in. Yes, we were on assignment. We had a lot of heavy doors slammed in our face before we were rescued.
Thankfully, Krewella goes so fucking hard, we could hear every last bassy drop come bleeding through Cinema's backdoors. They riled up the crowd with their anthemic "Go Hard" pretty early on. They kept up their pace, dropping easily recognizable hits like "Atom," "Ghosts N Stuff" and local heroes GTA's "Booty Bounce."
They played get-it-wet original "One Minute," before dipping into some heavy trap. You could hear the kids screaming their heads off through the walls. Just as we were about to lose patience, the right man showed up to let the bouncers know we were good to go.
The fire marshal was right. The whole place was a sea of sticky arms and sweaty haircuts. We can't imagine how anyone in that crowd managed to breathe, let alone scream along to every Krewella lyric as it was delivered. But Pompano showed it could go as hard and wet as anywhere else, and the bouncing threesome behind the decks wasn't going to give them a chance to let up.
The two sisters, Jahan and Yasmine, and producer Rain Man looked like they were having the time of their life, dressed in black from head to toe. They take turns controlling the music and working the mic, sometimes jumping out to the front of the stage to sing along with their tracks and show love to their absolutely adoring fans.
"Everyone single person in this goddamn place needs to touch the sky," Yasmine shouted into the mic as Jahan pulled up "Breathe," a collaborative track they wrote with Skrillex. Purple and green lasers shot through the room as hands furiously shot up from front to back.
By 1 a.m. they broke out "Killing It," the song that made them famous just about a year ago. To say they've come a long way since early 2012 is clearly an understatement. Girls went crazy on shoulders and camera phones emerged from every corner. There was not one inch of unused space.
"Who the fuck is sweaty out there?" The crowd screamed as Flosstradamus' "Original Don" remix boomed through the PA. But no drop seemed more custom-made for the night than the eventual, almost necessary Skrillex rework of "Cinema."
A couple dancing girls took up duty in front of the flashing flood lights. The crowd exploded, singing along to Krewella's "Alive." Rain Man came out from behind the decks to spray the revelers with smoke.
"Make some noise if you feel it right now," one of the girls screamed into the mic. They cut the music and let the crowd sing along to the track before bringing it in for a hard finish.
"Thank you so fucking much," they cried, but already the chants for one more song were bubbling up. Not a group to leave their fans hanging, they got back behind the decks and gave it to them just like they wanted with a hard remix of "One More Minute."
Some stagehands broke out a t-shirt cannon and sent black tees flying. The girls grabbed their mics and headed for the front of the stage, singing along with their song, jumping up and down and getting the place really live before jumping out for a crowd surf. They only got out like, two feet before security helped them back up, faces beaming.
They told the crowd to "Come and Get It," then reiterated their love for their crazy fans, taking a few minutes to give high-fives and hugs to the front rows.
And there was one more surprised for one very special fan. A girl was led to the front of the decks, looking surprised.
"Happy fuckin' birthday, Brittany," Jahan said before smashing the girl's face with cake and licking it off. After that, local DJ XTC took control and the announcer promised music until 4 a.m. But we pretty much high tailed it home because, well, once you're ignored for an hour, it's kind of hard to get into the PLUR mentality.
At least Krewella brought the pain.
Personal Bias: It's not very nice to laugh in the face of a reporter who's just trying to do her job. It's even worse to oversell tickets in the hundreds, cheating kids out of $30 and a good time.
The Crowd: Well, half of them were outside.
