Radio-Active Records' Top 5 Releases for March 2-8:
1) Beach House - Teen Dream (Sub Pop)
2) Four Tet - There Is Love in You (Domino)
3) Pavement - Quarantine the Past (Matador)
4) Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here (XL)
5) Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me (Drag City)
Mike's thoughts on the week:
"The fact that Gil Scott-Heron is still alive is puzzling. His new record is a hybrid of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack and Riker's Island prison blues. Joanna's record has been hyped up in tons of mainstream publications including the New York Times, so that guarantees sales, especially when you're dealing with an independent artist. [Is she] the new Kate Bush? Not so sure on that one. But on the upside, we've sold out of her new 3xLP box set! Anything Pavement releases is always a consistent seller, whether it's gold or garbage."
What albums do you think we'll be talking about at this time next week?
"Definitely the new Gorillaz, Broken Bells [Gnarls Barkley's Danger Mouse and the Shins' James Mercer], Frightened Rabbit, and hopefully the new Liars LP. There's also a new unreleased Jimi Hendrix LP [Valleys of Neptune]. We'll wait and see what that's all about. Didn't that ship already sail?"
