Are we in a recession? Because the nightlife industry sure hasn't gotten the memo. In fact, this week the much delayed opening of The King Is Dead is finally happening. The venue is rumored to officially open tonight (Roc Media, the venue's contact, didn't return our calls asking for confirmation), but it's the Friday night party in conjunction with Poplife, Supermarket Creative and Gorillas called Heir to the Throne that has us excited. DJ/rapper/hipster icon Roxy Cottontail will be in town to kick things off along with Contra, who just returned to Miami after touring extensively as Santogold's live DJ. Not enough to get you over to the Design District? How about free cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from 11 p.m. to midnight?
On the other side of the causeway is also another long delayed project, Opium Group's newest lounge, Louis, at the Gansevoort South opens this weekend as well. But what is Louis exactly? Trust us, they aren't naming it after (archrival) Louis Puig. Instead, it is regally-themed lounge, which promises exclusivity and stands as more competition for the increasingly crowded Collins Park area. Should Mokai and Aero Bar be nervous?
The 6,500-square-foot lounge is said to have Parisian palace feel with modern accents such as punches of bright colors and graffiti. What's interesting is the lounge's mission to seem a little less mainstream and more daring by "featuring music that dazzles mainstream and underground senses alike" -- props for trying to be progressive, but it will be interesting if Opium Group actually keeps their word. But let us not get ahead of ourselves; we'll reserve our full judgment for when we actually visit the place.
