Just imagine the chops it takes to be voted the funkiest act in the world's funkiest town. Out of the sweat-drenched, hard-partying, all-night mayhem of New Orleans comes Papa Grows Funk, winners of Downbeat magazine's Funkiest Band award for two years running. All the requisite ingredients for an ear-tickling musical gumbo are here: steaming Hammond, chinky guitar, wailing sax, and, of course, a rhythm section heavy enough to keep you anchored to the dance floor. Following in the footsteps of the legendary Meters, PGF keeps its music unbelievably tight and its beats syncopated but greases it up with loose, jazzy improvisation. These two shows in South Florida will bring the bayou to the beach.

Papa Grows Funk plays at 10 p.m. Thursday, December 16, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. "J" St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $15. Call 561-585-2583. On Friday, December 17, it opens for Perpetual Groove. The show starts at 9 p.m. at the Culture Room, 3045 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $12. Call 954-564-1074.
