Mondays. No matter what you do, they just keep on coming. The only logical way to handle this situation is to trick your body, stop listening to your brain, and party like the weekend never ended. That's the plan behind the newest West Palm Beach reggae night on the most unassuming night of the week at Longboards. Yes, a seafood restaurant on Clematis that gets wild every Monday without question.
Local "good time reggae" kings Spred the Dub go front and center every week to keep the crowd strong and the vibes right. Over the last four years, the hard working men of Spred the Dub have turned Monday Night Reggae into one of the biggest and most well known weekly parties in downtown West Palm Beach.
I mustache you a question. Do you want your Monday to be awesome or shitty?
The party earned its keep as a weekly staple for three years at Reef Road before moving to Longboards about a year ago when Reef got dropped off at a farm (to die) with all the other reggae bars (R.I.P.). Out of all the spots on Clematis, why did Spred the Dub choose Longboards as its successor? Lead singer Mick Swigert said "its got the same vibe" and it's vibes that really matter to Spred the Dub fans. As well as Micks' mustache. Seriously, have you seen that thing? It's like another member of the band at this point.

Spred the Dub refer to their special blend of music and attitude as "good time reggae." Bassist Kevin Johnson lays it out, "Our message is, when you come to our shows, leave all your shit at the door and come and have a good time." Monday nights at Longboards are meant to be nothing but a blow out, with an emphasis on drink specials and taking up residence on the dance floor. The band knows how to keep this eager crowd entertained with ass-shaking originals and "this is my jam!" covers that have resulted in fans returning week after week.
But how do us non-musicians muster the motivation to keep the party going on a goddamn Monday? Accompanying the live tunes is DJ HiGrade who steps in and spins all sorts of tasty treats between sets. He guarantees it's the best way to start the week: "You can look back and say that Monday was fucking awesome instead of starting off with a shitty Monday." Well, sir. We can't argue with that perfect logic.
Standard Monday at Longboards
Kevin sheds a different light on how, against all odds, the Monday crowd is always ready to get down. "I think a lot of people that work in the biz work on the weekends, and this might be their night off." The best way to relish your resting period in South Florida just might be with live tunes and $3 Red Stripes.
So out of all the possibilities, what's the main reason Monday Night Reggae is one of the most reliable weekly parties around? No one knows for sure how it happened, but Kevin sums it up like this: "Most people think Monday isn't going to be anything. But it's been good to us for so long. Now word of mouth has built it up. If you don't have to wake up on Tuesday, it's really the only thing going on."
There you have it folks. But remember, people who say no to going out because they have to work the next day are terrible decision-makers. It's the weekdays that have the best deals and most unabashed crowds. And it's Monday Night Reggae that does it better than anywhere else.
Monday Night Reggae 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., every Monday at Longboards, 519 Clematis Street, West Palm Beach. There are $3 Red Stripes and Sailor Jerry drinks. Five buck food options. Never a cover. Check out the always-updated event page for more info.
