The Psychedelic Furs Head to Culture Room Monday Night
Thirty years plus and the Butler brothers are still going strong with their new-wave concoction, the Psychedelic Furs.
Led by singer Richard, with his sibling Tim on bass, the group emerged from Britain's late '70s postpunk scene to become one of the genre's founding troubadours. Thanks in large part to John Hughes' naming his Brat Pack romance film after the group's seminal '81 hit "Pretty in Pink," a deluge of mainstream success came the Butlers' way. And with it arrived hordes of tween gals dressed head to toe in pink outfits at shows.
The group crafted a cult following through the mid-'80s, but with the Hughes flick and their sound shifting from arty new wave to a more pop sound, they gained international fame.
Sure, some of the old-time fans waned, but the Furs' success kept snowballing. In 1987, the release of Midnight to Midnight resulted in the band's cracking the Top 40 charts in the U.S.
The Butler brothers disbanded in the early '90s but reunited the band in 2001, resulting in an act with much more gusto and tenacity. Still growing stronger, the Furs won back the hearts of their longtime followers too. Testament to this was their performance in downtown Miami hot spot Grand Central in October of 2012. Never has this hip performance venue been so replete with 40-somethings ready to jam. And on a Wednesday night to boot. But it wasn't just the older end of Gen Xers packing the house; the band's timeless classics like "Love My Way" and "The Ghost in You" attracted a new generation of followers. Seems the Butlers have an eternal, fetching sound that's relevant even to today's millennials.
