Long before Drake made Canada a viable hip-hop nation, there was another
young rapper waving his maple leaf with pride. He went by the name of
k-os (all in lowercase; stands for "Knowledge of Self") and had a little
song called "Superstar Pt. Zero" that eventually worked its infectious
beats and melodic hook onto mainstream commercials and suburban b-boy
jams. That was 2002.
Eight years later, k-os still reigns supreme as an MC with a mission to bring positive messages and conscious music that his predecessors like A Tribe Called Quest and Public Enemy would appreciate. His fourth album, entitled Yes!, is making its way across the friendly borders of Canadian pop charts to the U.S. Billboard realm with such singles as "4 3 2 1" and the humorous "I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman." Well, k-os, South Florida wishes we knew you, and we'll get that opportunity on May 29 for a rare Sunshine State appearance.
With MayDay and ArtOfficial. 9 p.m. Saturday, May 29, at Revolution, 200
W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $12 to $15. Click here.
