Background Check Saved Condo Building From Adding Accused Killer as a Neighbor
Krebs had something of a handicap when applying to live in a condo building: his criminal record.
You wouldn't expect private investigator Jim Rigney to find much when he does background checks for potential condo dwellers. But back in June 2009, the Ocean Riviera building on the Galt Ocean Mile hired him to do a check on a potential resident that turned up about 30 criminal charges.
Rigney, a retired New York City detective commander, went to work digging up the records and produced a 17-page report with 40 pages of supporting pages. He sent it over to the manager of Ocean Riviera and then, at his behest, to the man applying to become a resident.
The applicant was denied access to the building, and residents of Ocean Riviera were lucky that they didn't get Brian Krebs as a neighbor.
Krebs is the guy cops say stabbed drummer and music promoter Jimmy Pagano to death in
a bar fight. Krebs has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is in jail awaiting trial. (He's also, as you might have read here, partially the inspiration for the American Pie character Stifler.)
What Rigney turned up in his search included 19 charges that Krebs faced in his former town of Chattanooga. The charges include vandalism, robbery, and retaliation against a judge, juror, or officer. (Details of the cases aren't available online, but I'll be requesting them this week. If you'd like to see the summary, search Krebs' name here.) It appears from the records that Krebs spent two stints in jail from the charges, one for 30 days and another for nearly a year.
From there, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, where he ran a biotech company out of another condo he rented in the Galt Ocean Mile area.
Rigney does a lot more in-depth investigations than this one, but when asked whether this proves the need for these simple background checks, he had a quick answer: "Yeah, it sure does. People can make arguments about privacy, and that is important with these kind of things, but this also is the kind of thing that shows a need for these background screenings."
