Bubba the Love Sponge Vs. Octo-Mom
I freely admit to being a pencil-necked geek whose brain is addled by too much of the Diane Rehm show. Still, I'm rarely shocked. Yet as I was flipping through radio stations this morning, I was taken aback by the on-air pummeling that 93.1's Bubba the Love Sponge was giving to the Octo-Mom.
Bubba was talking about how people like the Octo-Mom just drain resources from taxpayers; only "good people" like himself should be allowed to have kids, he said. In the span of just a few minutes, Bubba called the Octo-Mom a "whore" at least five times, and a "bitch" at least eight times. "Kill the mom! Kill the doctor!" he said.
Judgin by the FCC's guidelines, Bubba was pushing his luck. On the agency's website it defines profanity as "including language so grossly offensive to members of the public who actually hear it as to amount to a nuisance." Profane speech is prohibited on broadcast radio and television between the hours of 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. David Friske, the director of the FCC's Office of Media Relations, says his office reviews any complaints it gets and makes determinations based on context.
Well, at least Bubba exercised some restraint when he said of the Octo-Mom, "I so want to blast the C-word on her right now!" -- but didn't. Then he went back to his contest to see if any of his minions could drink a gallon of green milk without puking.
