Florida Man's Cell Phone Stops Bullet When He's Shot During Armed Robbery
A Florida man's cell phone saved his life when it stopped a bullet shot at him during an armed robbery.
According to a WESH report, an armed man shot a Winter Garden Hess gas station clerk during a robbery.
It's a good thing he chose to skip those Walmart prepaid phones that break when you sneeze on them. He instead sprang for something made of kevlar, apparently.
According to the report, the suspect entered the gas station Friday morning and asked the clerk to help him find a specific beverage. As the clerk headed over, the man whipped out a revolver and demanded the safe be opened.
The clerk couldn't get the safe open.
Another clerk then entered the store, and the armed suspect demanded he try opening the safe.
When the second clerk's attempt also failed, the suspect fired a single shot before running out of the store, according to police.
Emergency services were called in when one of the clerks began to complain of chest pains.
Paramedics began checking the man. That's when they discovered that the suspect's gunshot had struck him in the chest but that the cell phone in his shirt pocket had stopped the bullet.
The man's smartphone had a shattered screen the size of a bullet hole. The bullet was found lodged inside the phone.
The clerk's pain came from the impact of the strike, but the bullet never entered his body. He was taken to the hospital to be checked out but was released soon after with no further injuries.
Police described the suspect as a black man about six feet tall. He was wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt, pants, and sunglasses. He also wore a bright-yellow traffic vest and white gloves.
