Fort Lauderdale Downtown Streets to Close Tonight for 5k Run
The Mercedez-Benz Corporate Run is tonight. Las Olas and Downtown Fort Lauderdale are gonna be a nightmare, so avoid the area if you can.
Las Olas Boulevard and downtown Fort Lauderdale are going to be a bit of a traffic mess Thursday afternoon. That's because the Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run is being held in the area, which means roads will be shut down and chaos might be in your future. So if your afternoon commute involves areas in and around there, you may need to consider another route.
If you work in downtown, today is the day to ask your boss if you can leave early.
Some closures already started happening Wednesday as organizers got things ready. But Thursday afternoon and into the evening is when the actual 5k will go down, meaning more roads will be closing for longer hours.
The Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run is expected to draw around 7,500 runners and volunteers. The race itself kicks off at 6:45 p.m. at Bubier Park, located at 32 E. Las Olas Blvd.
Las Olas Boulevard between Andrews and SE Second Avenue will be closing at 1 p.m.
Officials are then closing streets between Las Olas Boulevard and Andrews and SE First Avenue at 6 p.m. and won't be reopening them until 11 p.m.
Then at 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., streets along the race route will close to accommodate runners. The race itself will run from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m.
At 9:30 p.m., streets except Las Olas will be reopened.
Las Olas will reopen at 11.
Race organizers are also wanting to remind folks that the first half-mile of the race route, which is north of the New River, will be packed with 5k participants and runners, which means no traffic in the area will be able to move for about 20 minutes. The Fort Lauderdale Police Department will open the roadways to traffic as the last participant proceeds along the route.
During the first 20 minutes of the race, there will be no traffic allowed on SE Third Avenue north of Davie Boulevard through Las Olas. South of Davie Boulevard, southbound traffic will not be permitted to SE 14th St.
Runners generally take over all of SE Third Avenue to Davie Boulevard for the start and during this time period.
Northbound Andrews Avenue south of SE 17th St. will be directed to SW Fourth Avenue or US 1. Traffic north of 17th St. will be sent west to SW Fourth Ave at 15th Street.
Davie Boulevard between Andrews and SE Third Avenue will be closed to traffic.
Alternate routes include sending east traffic south to SE 17th Street and west traffic directed back to U.S. 1. Southbound Andrews will remain open to traffic.
You can always use your GPS to circumvent the area, but it's probably best to just steer clear of it altogether to avoid your life being ruined.
