Great White Shark Spotted Off Florida, Described as Curious and Docile
Capt. Jason Johnson, of Triple J Charters, who had taken a charter out for some yellowtail snapper fishing, spotted a great white shark about six miles south of Key West on Wednesday morning.
Johnson described the shark as "docile" and "very curious."
So it's totally OK to take your kids up to it so they can pet it and take pictures with it and ride it like a horsey, yay!
Johnson tells NBC 6 that the "gentle giant" shark swam right up to the boat, curious about the craft (or, maybe just checking out the buffet? It's all how you interpret it. Ha. Ha. Just kidding. Maybe.)
"Most of the time when I see sharks," Johnson said, "they are looking for something to eat. He didn't have any interest."
Great whites in Florida is nothing new, especially lately.
Back in January, two great whites were spotted swimming just 200 yards off the coast of Jacksonville Beach.
In March, a fisherman looking to hook himself some grouper off the coast of St. Petersburg nabbed himself a great white shark instead.
In April, another massive, 1,000-pound,13.5-footer was caught just 180 feet off Port Everglades Inlet in Fort Lauderdale.
And then, in May, a group of people spotted one just ten miles off the Florida Keys. And one of the people decided to go swim with it and take its picture.
That dude ended up surviving his decision to swim with a massive man-eating fish, so it could very be that this was the same shark Captain Johnson spotted.
We're no scientists, and pretty much all our knowledge of sharks comes from watching movies like Jaws and Sharknado, but our theory is that these sharks want to lull us into a false sense of security before they take over Florida.
This is how the Sharkpocalypse begins, people!
