For some major exhilaration, all you need is a thin sheet of plastic unrolled in the backyard, a garden hose, and bodily momentum.
Slip n' slides are the mainstay of summer. This summer, Broward County is getting its own — and much bigger than anything you ever slid down as a kid.
Slide the City is a Utah-based company that travels the world with its massive 1,000-foot water chute, which is three lanes wide and the length of three football fields (about a fifth of a mile long). It's coming to Broward County on June 4. The slide will be unrolled in Vista View Park in Davie, where people can fling themselves down a 55-foot hill.
Last July, Schlitterbahn announced plans to buy land from the City of Fort Lauderdale to build another of its over-the-top water parks. However, a competitor, the team behind the Rapids water park in Riviera Beach, sued the city, saying that it should have taken bids from multiple companies. The case is currently winding through the court system; on Monday, the city filed a motion for summary judgement. Until it is resolved, this enormous water slide will have to do.
The slide came to South Florida for the first time in February 2015. The 1,000-foot slide was unrolled down Clematis Street in West Palm Beach. However, many riders grew frustrated after losing momentum partway down the slide. Event organizers blamed the flat terrain. That's why they brought the slide last May to Vista View Park's 55-foot hill to ensure that gravity will shoot riders downhill.
But... all this fun will cost you. Riders must go down with an inflatable tube. There will be $10 inflatable tube rentals onsite, but you can also bring your own. Tickets to go down the slide three times during a two-hour window are currently $30 and will slowly increase to as much as $45 as the event nears. (All-day admission to the Rapids is $45.)
Slide the City will take place Saturday, June 4, at Vista View Park, 4001 SW 142nd Ave. in Davie.
