As the gossip pages buzz with rumors that Tiger Woods was partying with his alleged mistress, Rachel Uchitel, this weekend at the Everglades Club on Palm Beach, it's time for a reality check.
First, Palm Beach's oldest and most exclusive club is a gray-haired joint. According to one longtime member, the average member is in his 60s, and it costs about $10,000 a year to join. Not exactly party central.
Second, the club has a long history of excluding people with Woods' skin tone.
Sammy Davis Jr. was once turned away from the famed Worth Avenue institution. To this day, the club has no black
members -- in fact, club president William Pannill says no black person
has ever been put up for membership.
One former employee, who left the club this year, says the only
time he saw a black person on the golf course was during the one day a
year when employees were allowed to play. Another former employee
explains that black workers are given jobs that do not require them to
interact much with members, such as trimming trees.
Yet, according to Entertainment Tonight, this is where Woods chose to spend his Saturday night?
That's a tough story to swallow. Socialite Uchitel may have been at the club, but her alleged lover would likely want to stay as far away as possible.
