ArtPalmBeach may be smaller than Art Basel Miami Beach, but its a sleek and worthy answer to the Swiss behemoth. Opening to the public on January 15 for its 13th year, APB features 75 international dealers, including a few from Israel and Syria, and 1,500 artists. The works of painting, video, and design are all contemporary. The gallery space is itself an art installation designed by urban architects. This years theme is Going Global, so plenty of attention will be heaped on art scenes cropping up in South America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. There will be a special focus, for example, on Chinese ink painting, a delicate style that started in Chinas Tang Dynasty and, almost 2,000 years later, influenced American modernists like Georgia OKeeffe. The Young Gallerists exhibition highlights galleries less than 4 years old and showcases cutting-edge contemporary art. Living With Sculpture will fill up a garden with the sculptures of 30 artists.
