In a world of email, text messaging, and Facebook, it's hard to believe that the Barefoot Mailman actually existed. But in the 1880s, with no roads to connect the 68-mile route from Palm Beach to Miami, the only way mail could be delivered was by walking along the beach. Learn more about our historic beaches and have fun in the sun at the second-annual Barefoot by the Sea, hosted by the Historical Society of Palm Beach County and the Delray Beach Historical Society. Enjoy a historic beach walk with Michael Bornstein as the Barefoot Mailman, and listen to live music by Tucker Academy students and reggae band ARTIKal Sound System. Children will enjoy making shark-tooth necklaces and messages in a bottle. And they won't want to miss the sea turtle races, shark feedings, and treasure hunt.
Get barefoot Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the historic Sandoway House Nature Center, located at 142 S. Ocean Blvd. in Delray Beach. The event, part of the PNC Bank Public Programming Series, is $10 per person and includes entrance into the Sandoway House, all activities, and a boxed lunch. Children under 3 are admitted free.
