A Night for the Jazz Lover

Normally a venue that’s dedicated to independent music, DJs, and art happenings, Fort Lauderdale’s hip hangout Green Room transforms itself one Thursday night a month into a jazz lover’s playpen. On this particular evening, you see, crackerjack guitarist Bobby Lee Rodgers and his trio take over the place and perform covers from jazz legends. “Jazz Session: Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio” features Rodgers and his backing band performing two sets’ worth of work from greats like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, and Miles Davis. If you are a jazz fan and you live in Broward County, it doesn’t get much better than the Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio. Rodgers, who formerly fronted heralded jam-band-with-a-Southern-twist the Code­talkers, decided in 2010 to get in touch with his jazz roots. Studying classical and jazz guitar at the University of Georgia, Rodgers certainly has the fundamentals; now his trio is one of Broward’s most proclaimed jazz groups. In this week’s edition of “Jazz Session,” Rodgers’ group tackles bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim. We know local jazz enthusiasts will be all smiles when Rodgers gives Jobim’s timeless “Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl From Ipanema”) a spin.
