Indoor Block Party

Now that the heat of summer has kicked in, true Floridians will tell you to go out only at night. Norton Museum is offering a summer kickoff for its latest installment, Block by Block: Inventing Amazing Architecture. Block by Block is the result of too many hours with oodles of Legos. Artist Dan Parker, a Lego-certified professional, has re-created ten iconic skyscrapers using the toy building blocks. Included in his works are One World Trade Center from New York, the Seattle Space Needle, Burj Khalifain from Dubai, and Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The plastic creations stand from four to nine feet tall. As part of the kickoff, beginning at 5 p.m., the Norton has included a full evening of events. Arrive for the opening of the exhibit and you'll get a bonus sampling of Due South Brewing Co. beer for tasting from 5 to 9 p.m. The Future Prezidents provide a soundtrack for the evening through 7:30. Bring the kids (or big kids) and create your own work of architectural genius in the DIY area, available from 5:30 to 7:30. At 5:30, be one of the first to catch a tour of the exhibit. At 6:30, join Maggie Edwards, curatorial assistant, for a Curator's Conversation.\ Bring your pad of paper and take part in Sketchbook Thursdays. All ages are invited to participate in Life on the Edge: Contour Lines from 6 to 8. The Block by Block exhibit runs through October 20. The Norton Museum is located at 1451 S. Olive Ave. in West Palm Beach. Admission costs $12 for adults; children are admitted free. Florida residents are admitted free on Thursdays through August with proof of residency.
